Heather's planning to come. She's bringing her .32 cowboy pistols and .38 spc cowboy rifle.

I'm glad Heather made it out for the shoot this evening! It was great seeing her again, as well as meeting a few new shooters and some returning students.

I enjoyed seeing Heather's cowboy guns, too! Boy, she really likes that rifle! Cool shooting .38 special! If I hadn't been so busy teaching I'd love to have tried that little pump action! She looked like she was having a ball with it!

A good time was had by all, and there were lots of smiling faces! I love it when the new shooters send their first shots down range, see where they hit their target, and a big smile lights up their face, followed by "Yes!" or "Wow!"

Thanks to all who came out, sent or brought their wives out to shoot, and thanks to Corinne for helping out! Marty and Sarge, thanks for helping behind the scenes with blowing up balloons, etc.

Karen, I had a great time as usual!! It's always fun teaching and then realizing that you've learned maybe more than you've taught! Good group of women last night! Looking forward to the next time!

Heather also had a great time. Thank you and Connie and everyone else who made it such a great experience for her.

We bought the rifle specifically for Cowboy shooting, and got it worked on so that it's very smooth. With .38 spc, in low power loads typical for cowboy, there's virtually no recoil. Only limitation: since it's a tube feed, must use flathead ammo. No round ball.

Heather and I both have a pair of pistols, and we both have a shotgun. (She has a mule-eared coach gun, I have a '97 pump.) But we both use the rifle. 8)

If you want some quality time with the rifle, say when and where, and I'll make it happen. It's the least I can do for all the help you've given to Heather.

Jim, Can you tell me if this is also true with a 22LR? Or do they even make it for 22LR? I'm having a problem with an old Rifle (my Dad's) and it keeps hanging up (FTF). It's also a tube feed. I've never heard of flathead ammo. Maybe I'm on the verge of learning something new. Sorry about hi-jacking this thread.

I have a tube fed 22lr and it has no issue with ball. i think the only limitation is Pointed rounds not round "ball' ammo. The new Leveroution (sp??) ammo lets you shoot pointed rounds as the tip is soft and flattens and will not turn your tube into a barrel as it sets off the primer in the next round

Agreed. Ball ammo should not pose any problem in a tube fed rifle. The only prohibition is for pointed bullets.
Up until the Leverevolution rounds all 30-30, 32spec and .35rem rounds had round nose bullets.

There are tubular magazine .22s (I've drooled over the .22 Yellow Boy, and were it legal for SASS competition, I'd own one in a heartbeat), but I have not heard of any .22 tubular mag having a problem. That means one of two things: it's a problem, but I just haven't heard about it, or (2) being a rimfire cartridge, it isn't susceptible to primer discharge as a result of contact with the noze of the bullet behind it. I don't know which is the case.

As a rule, I am very hesitant to disagree with karcent, but AFAIK, primer discharge has always been a problem with round ball centerfire ammo in tubular magazine rifles, ever since center fire ammo and tubular magazines first met. Not a terribly common problem, but a recognized problem. Hence, SASS's rule that lever rifle ammo be flathead ball.

I have used a lot of round bal 30-30 without issue.

All current commercial ammo for 30-30, .32 special and .35 remington has a round lead nose. The exception is the new LeveRevolution ammo from Hornady.
I am not familiar with any problems associated with these rounds which have been in existance since 1894.

The probem with tube mags is that a pionted bullet can cause a discharge in the mag from the recoil.

Maybe Dale will check in here with his opinion and years of experience.

I am not familiar with SASS rules, so I was not aware of their prohibition, but they may be exercising excess caution.
