Are there any scheduled for the near future? I know the "norm" is fall but a buddy wants to get his son in so he can shoot at the range (most require kids have hunter safety cert).

Michigan2A teaches hunter safety, but we don't currently have a class scheduled.
This discussion came up on another thread a while back, but maybe it's worth bringing up again. Some of the ranges don't necessarily require a hunter safety certificate specifically, although that is obviously one of the most recognized forms of firearm safety education for children. Some ranges will also accept a certificate for completing First Steps class or even a marksmanship program - something that shows the child has had some form of basic safety training.
I'm going to be doing a First Steps class for a child who is in a similiar situation and doesn't necessarily want to hunt, at least not at this time. Therefore, the hunter safety course has a lot of info she doesn't need right now. Maybe I can help your friend out. Feel free to give him my contact info. Of course, he'd probably want to check with his range of choice, but I know some will accept a first steps certificate. When it comes to shooting at the range, I really think a first steps course or a youth marksmanship program is more appropriate than hunter safety. I'm not knocking hunter education. I teach it, but while safety is the primary emphasis, the focus is different, and if the child is not going to hunt, I think there could be better options. Just my opinion.

Thanks Karen. He does plan to hunt in the fall. It may be worth exploring a class though. My friend enquired because all of his sons sports will be done and thought it would be a good time to get him in. Maybe there are others with the same mind set??? I'll give him your contact info.

That makes sense. I know how busy the kids get during the school year. I was considering scheduling a late summer hunter education class (Michigan2A), but I don't have anything set up yet. I'd also be happy to set up a First Steps course if there's interest. I'll be happy to help out either way.
