Major League Baseball
Kevin Hallinan, senior vice president for security and facilities management for Ma jor League Baseball, said there were no league-wide rules banning firearms at MLB property or events, though individual clubs may do so. He said each team has an active police officer as a part-time security consultant to address questions or concerns about firearms. "We have educated our players with regards to firearms as part of our spring training security presentations," Hallinan said.
NBA
According to Joel Litvin, president, league and basket ball operations, players - even if they legally own firearms and are registered to carry them - cannot carry them on league business or in the arenas or practice facilities. "But, the rule does not extend beyond that," Litvin said.
NFL
NFL security chief Milt Ahlerich said no firearms or dangerous weapons are allowed in NFL facilities, on NFL grounds or any time a player appears at an NFL-sponsored event. "We tell them that guns are dangerous, and we strongly encourage you not to own a weapon; but if you do, you cannot have it on NFL property," Ahlerich said. "They're not obligated to tell us that they own a gun."
NCAA
The NCAA leaves any rules or regulations regarding athletes and guns up to its individual institutions or conferences, according to an NCAA spokeswoman. An NCAA press release in March 2003 did note that firearms, explo sives and other weapons are prohibited during practice or competition at all sites for the men's and women's basketball tournament, a policy still in effect. The Ohio State University code of student conduct says a student could face disciplinary action for the use, storage or possession of dangerous weapons or firearms unless authorized by the university. In addition, every campus building has signs indicating that firearms are not permitted, even with a permit.
