Well i received this from my father in-law and was wondering if i were to sell it what should i ask for it? I can get a picture of it later today, its in excellent condition. It rarely got shot with in its lifetime(the bolt has some minor corrosion) but it cycles and shoots great for being 71 years old.

Make: Remington
Model #: Targetmaster 510-X
Build Date: Jan 1942(BL barrel stamp)
Age: 71yrs old

I updated the first post.

510 x is valued at $150 in 95% condition. If it was a 510x SB, value goes up to about $270.......

yea its not a Short Barrel(i think thats what the SB is). Im enjoying it so far. I really want to mount an old style scope on it. I just need to figure out mounting.

If that rifle is an "SB" I believe you have a smooth-bore Routledge barreled .22.

Routledge was a man from, IIRC, southeast Michigan. You can probably look it up in the Remington sites?

AFAIK the .22 cal normally rifled barrels of the Remington 5xx-series model rifles was 25" long. (It's been a while ;) )

PS - Here's one:

Seems like Routledge was from down in Monroe area or 'thereabouts.'

Yep, the SB is a smoothbore. It is listed as one of the variations on Remingtons' site:
http://www.remington.com/products/archived/rimfire/bolt-action/model-510-targetmaster.aspx

If it still has the date code numbers on the left side of the barrel, just in front of the receiver, it is an original Remington barrel.

One thing good about the X model introduced in the 60's, they were all grooved for scope mounting. They also came with deluxe sights. The original rears usually bring $100 or more on ebay. They were rather tall and often removed for scope mounting, the same rear sight was used on the bolt action Nylon rifles.

Great shooting family heirloom, congratulations!

yea it has the original barrel since the Date Code is BL(Jan 1942) but it also has the number 47 next to the date code.

The first two to three characters are the date code (as you discovered), the others are thought to be "proof marks", probably related to batch runs for the year. Remington has not released the information to decode them, as far as I know.

This B L would be Jan. 1964, as the X models weren't made till 1963 or 64.

not according to the Remington society it could be either Jan 1942 or Jan 1964

http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes

there isnt much variation between the 510 and the 510x

http://www.remington.com/products/archived/rimfire/bolt-action/model-510-targetmaster.aspx

I cant find a specific starting manufacture date regarding the 510X.

The 510A, 510P and 510X were the three different grades that the 510 was produced in. Production of the 510 was from 1939 to 1962. There are no '64 510s'

P.S.
The dates are right there in your second Remington link, the same link I posted earlier.

The model 510 was discontinued in 1962. If you have a model 510-X with the barrel code B L, it was made in 1964.

Just trying to help, enjoy the rifle.

Round is right, it states that all variations of the 510 were discontinued in 1962. i also have a 1959 Remington Scoremaster 511 that i currently need a new bolt for(lost it whilst moving) that one was a March 1959 build date. It's in storage currently while i try and find the bolt.

I guess if you have been collecting Remington rimfires as long as I have, you would know that the X series 500's came out after the others were discontinued in 1962. 510x,511X&512X had thinner barrels and the nylon type sights.

I guess a quick internet search doesn't teach you everything. You might want to pick up this book if you are serious. Remington .22 Rimfire Rifles by John Gyde' and Roy Marcot, the Remington historian.

That is all.

I dont see why it is that your arguing with me. The 510x i have isn't grooved for a scope and according to what you said that they started grooving them in the 60's. And the years they produced the 510(in all variations) were 1939 to 1962. This information is right off Remington's website, I trust the info more than what your saying since its directly from the manufacture.

From John Gyde the authority on Remington 22's and a former Michigan resident:

"Rem discontinued the 500 series in 1962 & replaced them with the nylons 10, 11, & 12. Because of "Customer Resistance" to the nylon bolts, Rem re-introduced the 500 series with the "X"s. There were some internal changes, the barrel was slimmed and shortened, the sights were changed, etc. They were used to fill the product line until the introduction of the 580 series."

Because of the low production numbers the Remington collectors are always after the 510x's
