My wife and I are looking at getting into Trap shooting and maybe Sporting Clays, at least I like the Clays better.

We have been once using a friends gun and really had a good time.

I am trying to decide on a good first gun that will be good for both. I thought maybe a 20 ga so my wife can use it as well.

Now i have read all kinds of things about the different guns out there and I wish I had unlimited money to buy whatever I want, but the budget is limited. I want something less than $1000, a O/U as well since we both like those.

I have read about Rugers, Berettas, Brownings, but while those all have great reputations and reviews by owners most are out of my price range brand new.

Anyone have any suggestions for a make/model that would fit the above criteria?

So many choices and so little money. :)

the stoegers, Tristar, Mossberg, and SPR are pretty inexpensive (well at least under $1,000) and all make a 20 gauge but I have never used one

FWIW, I've got a Stoeger Condor, and the gun has held up pretty well.
I think the price has gone up slightly on them, but you can find one for $350 or less. The best price I saw was around $289 a few years back.

They also make one with interchangeable 20 and 12 ga barrels. That's probably more like $450.

I was at Dick's in Taylor, and they had a nice looking o/u for about $450 or less. The Mossberg Silver Reserves look o.k., but they're a little heavy. If your going to be small game hunting, that's something to take into consideration.

Also, there's a gun show in Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor this weekend, and you've got the Pt. Moulee Waterfowl Festival coming up.

Good luck and enjoy the sport.

The chances of finding one gun that will fit both of you is pretty slim unless you are both of similar build and size. We have rental guns available at Island Lake. Beretta 391's semi-autos in both 20 ga. and 12 ga. We also have a Beretta O/U.

You should be able to find a used 391 for around $650.00-$700.00 or possibly a used Browning O/U from $850.00-$1200.00; patients is the key here.

and look at the clinics we are offering. Some of these may be helpful to you and your wife and give you the opportunity to try a few different guns.

So many choices and so little money. :) Advice from a 2nd generation 20 yr ATA 27yd Line AAA Trap Shooter..
If you want to play the clays games there is no such thing as a budget. Just lower amount of shooting. Meaning less practice.
If you want to get good..practice is a must....Get a Second Job!!!

If you want to just play, something dependable, easy on recoil with ease of parts...
Get a Rem 1100 or BT99.
If you want to get on yer way towards a shooting addiction start out with Browning's..BT99 for singles/Handicap in trap or a Citori set up for trap or one set up for Sporting. BT99 are Bullet Proof for 100k rounds with regular maintainence.
Go make a day of it and go down and see Bill Jaqua>>> http://www.jaquas.com/
They have the best selection of new and used trap or sporting smoothbores around. Also you can take any used gun no matter the price tag and for the cost of a box of new shells walk right out the door and try it out on the trap field!!!
Another thing...
If your going to shoot trap shoot regstered targets and or get on a winter league team to stay focused all year.

Trap
Sporting
Two different disciplines..but equal fun..
Trap pays alot more as you get better and there are alot more trap fields and shoots to attend.:bfg:

Good Luck...
