My name is Steve Kuhn. I am the Director of Loss Prevention for Bass Pro Shops. The policy concerning concealed carry and open carry are the same. Both methods of carrying a firearm in our stores is permitted as long as it is lawful. In the case of Nevada both are and checking your firearm is not required. I have contacted the Loss Prevention Manager in the Vegas store about this situation and he has assured me that he will personally make sure all Door Greeters are properly trained and know that open carry is lawful and does not require the firearm to be checked. If you find a problem there again please feel free to send me an e-mail or call my office directly. My direct number is 417 873-4796.

That said, try to take your AK-47 or AR-15 to the rifle range at Bass Pro. Let me know how that goes for ya.
I have reserved range time at Bass Pro to shoot. Upon enetering with my bag of ammo, muffs, etc., I was questioned about firearms. I quietly and politely stated that I had a CPL and was carrying concealed. I was denied entry until the pistol was unloaded and locked in a borrowed case.

I have already said "No", Bass Pro does not get my money; there are plenty of other stores that welcome me and treat me like the big boy that I am.

I have a buddy that was using the range at Bass Pro and was putting a Osama Bin Laden target up and they told him he couldn’t use any targets with images of humans (if that's what you want to call Bin Laden) on them.

It has nothing to do with any government ban. The NRA has a policy in their classes and at their range at headquarters that des not permit human likeness or silhouette targets. Because of theirs, many ranges have followed suite.
Doug, thanks for the information on Bass Pro. Maybe Cabelas will see that and decide to follow along.

Top Gun in Taylor hands out human silhouettes.. including one that's a picture of an armed woman.
I think that Mill Creek in Dexter has the Bin Laden Silhouettes.

At least some touch of sense out there...
Because so many bullseyes have been known to carjack, rob, rape, and murder people.

I want one of those ranges like on Beverly Hills Cop 2 with the video screen and actual moving BG's. I'm sure they exist but are pricey. Dunno of any around here.

I don't go to the free range here because they make me fold over the head on my silhouette target. (Not to mention the closest I can set up is 75 feet away. For self defense, I'd be better off running if the target is that far away. ;) )

They do not bother you about your CCWs if you are wearing them. The firearms carried in cases all get locked by the greeter, who verifies unloaded, with store trigger locks at the door and trigger locks are removed at the range.
At the range they check rifle ammo with magnets for steel, so don't bring .223 ammo with penetrators or Wolf ammo with steel jackets.
They do not allow silhouette/human shape targets.
I have no problem with any of these procedures.

I don't shoot at Bass Pro so much anymore because of all the club shooting activities I find myself involved in. However once in a while I will have a student or friend meet me there to shoot. I usually bring a bag with several guns, plus what I am carrying. Never had them lock anything up after I told them I have a CPL. I know most of the daytime greeters by name. Have had some i don't know ask to see my CPL. It has been a couple of years since I shot a rifle there, but had no problem bringing in my AR-15 at that time.

I'm not completely sure if its true but I was told that Bass Pro Shops doesn't sell semi-auto's due to political reasons/pressure - higher capacity rounds in semi autos and what not.
I've steared clear of there just for that reason.
If this is true, I'd recommend that we all stear clear of a gun shop without a backbone.

So I'm confused... If I can legally open-carry in Bass Pro, walk around and shop, etc... Why is it that they have to check everything at the door if I'm going to the range? What would stop me from just putting the gun in a holster, ammo/targets/etc in a backpack and walking right in?

Marvin....that's not true about "military rifles"....let me explain.
Years ago when Bass Pro first opened in Auburn Hills I went there to shoot my M1 Garand. When I got to the range the guy working the counter said, "Oh, you can't shoot this, it's not allowed." I asked why and he said, "Because it's an assault weapon."...
I was shocked so I said, "Since when is a WWII RIFLE and assault weapon...and what does that even matter.".
Then he backpedaled and said he didn't mean assault weapon but a MILITARY rifle. I again asked for a definition and he stated the policy is no military weapons or weapons used by the military are allowed. I pointed out that the guy at the range was shooting a 1911 and that's a military weapon.
He then said it only applied to rifles. I again asked why and he said that because military weapons shoot powerful rounds that will go through their walls. I pointed out that my gun shoots a 30.06 round the same as the deer rifles they sell. I then asked to see a supervisor.
I went round and round with the supervisor asking why I couldn't shoot and he ,after realizing the fallacy of his argument, then stated that it wasn't the store's rules but that of the mall. The mall owners said it was a family place and didn't want people "scared" by seeing peopling carrying military guns through the store or shooting them. This seemed like PURE BS to me so I didn't argue with him and left.
When I got home I promptly fired off an email to the VP of Bass Pro expressing my disgust and letting him know that I'd be letting my Michigan gun group(MCRGO at the time) know about this stupid rule and we'd be boycotting his brand new store.
A few days later a got an email back from the VP saying basically that this WAS NOT the rule at Bass Pro. I was free to shoot any gun I chose and the only thing not allowed were FULLY AUTOMATIC weapons and steel core ammo. Apparently the new GM of the store had misinterpreted that rule(must not be a gun guy)and thought it meant no Evil Black Rifles. This got even worse when the guys working the range misinterpreted that as meaning no Military rifles of any kind.
Anyway, he told me to go back to the store and see the General manager which I did. The GM apologized for his mistake and I got a gift certificate to use for some free range time.
That's the Skinny on Bass Pro....
The range is a great deal, the people working the counter every since have been awesome....I highly recommend it.

From what I was told the idea behind allowing you to go in the store carrying but if not, making you lock the gun/zip tie is that if one if carrying(concealed or OC) he is in full control of his weapon.
If your weapon is in a case it is possible,in theory, that the case could be put down somewhere when that person is shopping, etc and someone could pick it up and that could cause a serious issue.
Paranoid maybe, but I can see their point. They're just covering their behinds.

This whole thread reminded me of something I almost forget about. A year or two after opening I went into the Auburn Hills Bass Pro shopping for a handgun and was told by the guy working the counter that all they were selling was their stock and after that there were only carrying revolvers. The kid looked like he was new so I thought he was just giving me the hard sell, you know "buy it while we still have it" so I ignored it.
A month later I went back into the store and sure enough all the semiauto pistols were gone and what was just a few revolvers. I asked another guy working the counter what the deal was..he seemed nervous to answer and said, "We're gonna concentrate more on rifles..there's no money in handguns."
This seemed odd as the gun counter there was almost always jammed and A LOT of people were buying handguns. I then asked that if that was the case why were they still selling revolvers and not semiautos? He seemed a little taken back by that and then tried to say that people hunted with revolvers but not semis so that is why.
I pressed a little harder and then he cracked...he said although he wasn't officially told anything but he had heard it was because of the Columbine shooting(which happened a little while before) and Bass Pro didn't want bad PR from selling Semi-autos...it might upset the Soccer moms.
Well...this ticked me off to no end so I again emailed the same VP as before and asked him why they weren't selling semi's. He gave me the same line about concentrating on Hunting Rifles. I told him flat out I thought that was a cop-out.....it was because of Columbine and they were more concerned about their image with Soccer Moms then keeping their REAL customers happy. I basically told him that the entire gun community would see through this and to expect LESS sales in the future not more. I let me gun group know and more emails/letters were sent. Others around the country noticed too so they must have complained as well as semis showed back up in the store a few moths later.
LESSON: If a store ticks you off as a gun owner don't be afraid to complain...they really do listen.

I heard one of those clowns behind the counter respond to a customer inquiry about hi-cap mags. Idiot behind the counter stated, in an indignant tone of voice, "we don't carry that, we're sportsmen around here". Just solidified my intolerance for the typical dumbass working behind the gun counter of any chain store....
