View Full Version : How do you carry?

Some day when I have my CPL I might decide to carry a gun. Have not yet figured out how to do this.

I hate purses. I don't carry one unless I absolutely have to (say, I'm dressed up and have no pockets and no other way to carry wallet or "girly" supplies), and i wouldn't want to have to start for the sake of the gun.

But women's clothing doesn't seem too friendly to on-body concealed carry....between my long-waisted-ness and the trend toward low-rise pants and short shirts, I have enough trouble sometimes keeping my belly button concealed, forget a gun!

There must be tricks out there that DON'T involve concealed-carry underwear, unnecessary jackets in 85-degree weather, or itsy-bitsy guns, right?

Give smart carry a look. I know a few females who it works for. I use one a lot myself.

WOW! Where did that come from and why is it here?

Never mind. Now that I realize that the signature is not part of the post, I understand.:nono:

I've tried every kind of carry over thirty years. Other than the female anatomy (), the problems are the same.
The best advice I can give is buy a good belt.
I prefer owb, strong side high ride 4 o'clock, then iwb. Ladies I've known prefer it further back or right at 3. Most stick it in their purse or console and forget about it. (Useless).
Shoulder holster when on a bike.
IWB has to have a high leather piece to keep the gun off the skin, I carry 1911 and that protects the safety also.
If it is in your purse, it is in the first thing they will take. Now they have you and your gun. CCW is first aid, not next aid or last aid.

IMHO the "speed rock" will give the best chance of survival. If you have to dig and fumble for you gun your screwed. Speed wins a gunfight. Dress accordingly.

If your flashing navel, you'll flash gun, but they be looking at the navel

I have alot of my female shooters using smart carry rigs, and arc rigs from raven them seam to offer the most options for your's and there type of dress.

There is no universal solution to concealed carry, and compromises and trade-offs are involved in any choice.

the article by Chris Cunningham at this link http://www.womensholsters.com/page2/page2.html
is from a female who makes custom holsters. The article "Carry Methods for the Self-reliant Woman" is an excellent summary of the issues unique to women and offers suggestions for resolving them.

I personally have not purchased holsters from Chris but would welcome any feedback from someone who has. I usually hand out this article to all the ladies in my CPL classes.

NRA's Personal Protection Outside the Home Course has one entire lesson devoted to the various methods of concealed carry and the trade-offs, compromises, strengths and weaknesses of each.

I carry IWB (crossdraw) with small to mid-sized guns. Larger guns go strong side. Occasionally, I use a bellyband for small to mid-sized. I avoid purse-carry like the plague.

With IWB, the gun pushes into soft tissue and is invisible. Any top that goes over my belt a couple of inches covers just fine. Strong side requires a vest/jacket.

My wife came across the combination of an NAA Guardian .380 in an R.L. Graham poptop holster and stopped looking further.

With CC in mind, I really wish I could get into that "maternity shirt" look that is so in right now, but I just can't do it...I bet it'd be ideal, though.

Or maybe I just need to wear a kurta (http://sisterbazaar.com/images_kurtas/ptcotton_kurta_white_sm.JPG) more often...they sure are comfy and pretty (I have several and usually have to stop myself buying more), but every once in a while I'm afraid someone unfamiliar with non-American clothing is going to ask when I'm due...

Purse carry has never worked for me either, but mostly because I can't find matching pumps in my size. :puppyeye:

OK, serious face on now... Strong-side IWB is the preferred carry for a couple of young ladies of my acquaintance, and lately has been a common carry mode for me as well. And for me, there is enough soft tissue to hide a piece of WWII field artillary. IWB just seems to be the easiest mode of carry, and allows rapid access.

Purses, fanny packs, day planners, etc., all look good in magazine advertising, but I've yet to see someone effectively/rapidly deploy a handgun from that mode of carry.

RSF can probably offer a more valid viewpoint on these particualr carry modes, they just seem ineffective to me (and my amateur opinion!)

most of our female students and crew of female doc's from one hospitial settled on 2 main styles of carry based on there dress etc... and size and so on. raven ACR rig worked well for the toned athleate styles and petite in vouge style dressers, and the curvy shooters loved them the more buisness crew went with smart carry and love it with there attire and allows them to carry without belts and more classy clean atire
with fast deep concealed acces.. even while giving exam's and in scrubs
off body rigs are shity period but often a last ditch attempt. fanny packs can be had that allow a good rapid release and effective draw to shot times. with a lot of reps

I prefer IWB, SOB, and pocket carry, they tend to work well for most people. Being male, my preferred carry locations will probably differ from those of a woman. Galco has a woman's top picks (http://www.usgalco.com/Women.asp) page. Galco also has a page for choosing the right holster (http://www.usgalco.com/QA.asp#Choosing+the+Right+Holster).

Actually it's usually a different part "down there" that they're mistaking for a gold mine, but, yeah. :poke: I guess if you trust somebody that much, you can stretch it a little further--no pun intended--and trust them with a gun too. :)

Sorta would give you pause, though. You're the one who's naked and they think THEY need something to protect themselves? :)

Sorry Hoss, but I get touchy when someone corrects my jokes, so here goes...

The rectum, comprised of the last 8 inches (approximate) of the large intestine is indeed where Dr. Sausage Fingers has his fist while palpating for the prostate gland, or for rectal abnormality.

Don't over-analyze, or analize, the jokes; they are just jokes. Unless Dr. Sausage Fingers is using your rectum as a sock puppet, then you might not see the humor.

We now return to our regularly scheduled thread, which was discussing the legal ramifications of medical staff carry a concelaed weapon on hospital grounds.

^ Yeah, but don't forget that in the women's section, we're used to things--and far more than fingers--in that other place! Granted, I've heard sometimes that particular procedure can call for a little action for da butt to keep it from getting jealous and feeling left out, but I think it's relatively rare to encounter a doctor who also wants to venture there for a girly exam. Luckily. One violation is bad enough...

Still researching, and I'm going to talk to some of the women at work who carry off-duty too and see how they do it, as they tend to dress somewhat similarly to me; I certainly don't dress slutty by any means but don't want to have to wear too-big shirts to keep a gun concealed either (and the boi wouldn't be too happy about that!). At the range last night I saw a guy being sold a holster for the gun he was buying and he tried out both IWB and OWB...I liked the look of the IWB, but would have to try one on and see. Probably once I have my CPL and some practice with whatever .22 I get, I'll carry that with hollow points or something until I save up for something better (that is, better for SD: bigger caliber), and for that one I don't want to spend a whole lot for a holster, so we'll see. I'd be willing to drop more coin and get something more fantastic for whatever I get larger and permanent-er :)

^ Now that you mention it, thigh holster IS the only way I can imagine carrying in something like a dress....otherwise I'm falling off my chair laughing at the thought of me digging around with my hands down my pants trying to get my gun while I"m getting mugged. Dude'd probably think I was loopy and take off!

OK, dumb question time:
since Michigan is an open carry state do I have to keep it concealed at all times with a CPL?
Summer is not a coat wearing season, can I legally carry in a shoulder holster worn over a t-shirt???

I'm sure I can handle it, it takes a lot to get me concerned. Once I take the CCW/CPL class, most of the time I will carry concealed but for the times I'm not wearing clothing suitable for concealing I'm not worried about open carry. I may get strange looks, strange comments from the uneducated and possibly a LEO but nothing that worries of bothers me. I'm a tough old goat:wink:
