Man robbed in the Centreville area

About 4:10 a.m. Sunday, July 30, officers were called to the area of Newton Patent Drive and Newton Tavern Drive. A 21-year-old Centreville-area man was robbed while walking on Newton Patent Drive. Two suspects approached the victim from behind, and placed a metal object up to the victim’s head. The suspects took the victim’s hand gun which he was openly carrying. The suspect’s then fled the area. The victim was not injured.
The suspects were described as black males wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with information about this incident or these suspects is asked to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or the police non-emergency number at 703-691-2131.

Yes I realize the story is about 2 years old, but it still fits. Possibly bad situational awareness on the victims part, but in this instance we can clearly see that OC made him a target.

I congratulate you on finding the single story that exists, even if it took several years for someone to find one.

Given the number of times people OC and this 1 time when something actually happened...well, your odds are still better playing the lottery.

Situational Awareness FTMFW !

Being aware of your situation and wearing a retention holster.

What it boils down to for me? I don't have a CPL. IF I want to carry to protect myself, I MUST Open Carry. The state has forced my hand by pinning down my wallet.

(I should disclose that I've finally applied for my CPL, but don't have it yet. This is thanks to xmas money and side work. Point still stands.)

I really don't see what good a retention holster would do in a situation like this....can you elaborate?

Done Deal,

He made a combination statement of BOTH situational awareness and wearing a retention holster.

It is the combination of the two which would have added in this case not just one.

I understand that if he had demonstrated sufficient situational awareness to avoid the situation to begin with but.....once SHTF, no holster was going to prevent what took place.

Sure, a good holster might mess up a gun grab but....a robbery? Hell, armored cars don't even stop motivated robbers....

I didn't go out looking for stories just to post here. I ran across it on another forum and cross posted it here.

I don't think anyone that OCs would say that this could never happen, it's just that it isn't common. In regards to this story we only have the newspaper account which are known to be very accurate and reliable.

We don't know that the only reason for the robbery was for his gun. I'm sure many CCers have been robbed and relieved of their gun once it was found by the criminal.

You have to be vigilant when you OC.

Yup....and some folks prefer automobiles over motorcycles for that very same reason.

My God what if you are OCing while riding a cycle, you would have to be more vigilant than a father of 10 teenage daughters in a frat house.:getsum2:

Without a CPL, you cannot OC or CC. That would come under the motor vehicle prohibition.

I wonder just how many cc'ers have had a "metal object" placed to their head and been robbed at 4:10 in the morning?springerdave.

"So the Fairfax County Police Department Public Information Office put a non-existent crime, complete with requests for crime stopper calls on their own web site? http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/images/emoticons/shock.gif"

"After they had posted the initial report, the individual who was robbed was found to actually have the weapon in his possession at his domicile, in a drawer. FCPD were apparently at the guys house for an unrelated search, and filing a false report is the least of the guys' worries at this point, as I was told. No correction has been made in the paper because they are still finishing/going to court on the other matter which carries a heavier penalty. I didn't ask for further details, I found out what I wanted, which was this story was either true or false. It ended up being false."

I just wonder if we will see this story pop-up every two years. Has anyone read of anything similar happening since this incident?

Oh, and I wonder why he didn't just get shot. Isn't that the reason some CPL trainers state one should not open carry - because you will be "the first one shot?"

There is some question that it really happened at all. See above post. That was what I was trying to impart when I made the facetious statement about how reliable news stories are on an earlier post. Confirm, confirm, confirm.

...so now I wonder what point was being made by the original post on this thread. The only point that should have been attempted is Venator12's "Confirm, confirm, confirm."

There was no "pont." I came across the story, realized it was OC related, had MGO up on the other tab, and cross posted it. I am OC neutral. I don't do it, nor think it's a good idea, but its a right we enjoy and I'm all for expanding our rights.
