Looking for opinions of a good general use folding knife. Must be a complete straight edge, assisted opening, and easy to carry. I'm thinking 3" blade would be just big enough, much longer and it could be a PITA to carry. Also must be under $50 (period), preferably OTD. This will be used for general carry, so mostly utility work but also as a weapon should I need to defend myself.
I really like the S&W Magic, although I've heard a couple "meh" reviews on it. I don't need anything fantastic, and for <$40 I can just toss it when it gets worn/broken. The glass breaker is also a nice touch. Don't really care about the blade profile or handle, but I'd prefer something black with a non-wood handle.

In short...
Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion
The Kershaw warranty is second to none (I had a brand new knife within three days on me shipping my old one out) and I have carried one for 5 years.
You can get the straight edge or half and half...they generally run around $45.00 and the warranty is lifetime. They are also sharper than any of the other knives I've bought, though I've never sprung for anything more expensive than $50.00

I've had a Buck Rush for about six years now. I carry it everywhere.
I've seen them at Wallyworld for $45.
Lifetime warranty. Made in USA. Spring assist opening.

Does the Kershaw Onion Scallion have a reversible pocket clip?
My right hand doesn't work well any more and I need a knife that I can clip in my left front pocket.
Unfortunately, most clips are designed for right handers.....which makes no sense to me.

I carry a leek. Very slender, very smooth operation. Pocket clip is reversible, but not to go from right to left handed.
I've had my leek for probably 5 yrs now. Over the 3 of those years the assisted opening got all gummed up with various things I've dropped it in. Sent it in and got a brand new one. The newest one I was being stupid and broke the tip of the blade off. Sent it in, and in less than a week a brand new one :)
I like it because it has a safety.
I also have the mini cyclone from them. I originally bought the fullsized cyclone, to realize when it got here, it was meant for someone like Shaq with huge hands. Isnt' as smooth as the leek probably due to the increased blade size.

Joeywhat, I've carried a Kershaw Boa for 3 years now and found it to be a great blade as far as durability use (I'm an electrician),and with a touch up on the blade here and there with a ceramic stick, kept it sharp enough where I can do some "surgery" with it if needed. I bought mine for $50.00, but that was while ago, and you can get them serrated or straight blade. I'd do some price shopping around first. Oh yeah, the pocket clip on it is reversible for left or right hand as well as either end of the knife.
Done Deal, I checked the Scallion for clip reversal, it's not available on that model, I asked why and got the "righty" answer only on that one.

Another Kershaw Scallion vote. I have a drawer full of knives I've bought over the years, I'm always looking for something better.
The Scallion is as close to perfect for me as I've found. I have the aluminum handle model, but I'm gonna get one with the synthetic. They can be had from $30~40.
Myself, I love the half serrated, but that's personal pref. Cuts with no effort, even in tight spaces.
The little protrusion on the back of the blade is an awesome assist, a push of the finger and the blade shoots open faster and you can see it move. The clip won't change sides, but there is a lanyard hole that could be utilized.

After reading all your comments about Kershaw knives, I ordered a Scallion myself. I can use a little pocket knife. Appreciate you sharing your vast and lengthy knowledge of blades.

joeywhat,
Recommend either the Spyderco Delica 4 or the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. The Delica 4 is a back-lock, VG-10 steel (perhaps my favourite) and uses the "spidy hole" for easy one-hand opening. The clip, which holds the knife very well, can be positioned on either side of the knife, for either tip-up or tip-down carry. The Mini-Grip is an Axis-Lock, 154CM steel (another of my favourites) and can be one-hand opened via either the thumb studs or holding back the Axis-Lock and flipping. The clip can be positioned for right- or left-hand carry, but it's tip-up only, as the Axis-Lock mechanism precludes it being mounted on the other end of the knife.
The Mini-Grip is slightly more expensive than the Delica 4.
Both can be had from New Graham Knives, one of the best knife-sellers in the world.
I've carried both. (I'm currently carrying the Mini-Grip.) I can recommend either. I have no preference.
If you want to save a few bucks, look at the Boker Trance. It's AUS 8, which is just "ok," in my view, but it's a heckuva a knife for the money. It's a frame-lock, which is one of my favourite locks, for its simplicity. I've carried that one, too.
These knives are all 3" blades or less.

I carry the Kershaw Leek pictured here. It is a Great knife. Very comparable to the much more expensive Benchmade my dad carries.

For a knife in the $50 range I would encourage you to look at the Cold Steel Ti-lite (zytel handle) or the Cold Steel Recon 1. I carry either one depending on the mood I'm in. The Ti-lite carries very well and is probably my favorite of the two. The Recon 1 is the half-serrated clip point model and is one of the sturdiest knives I've ever owned (please note that I have an older model of the Recon that was made in Japan, not Taiwan).

I know it's just my opinion, but I'm with mishooter. You can't go wrong with Benchmade. They're pricey but well worth the extra $. I carry a mini-grip that I picked up at a "pre-owned" store. When I saw it in the glass case with a $10 price tag I almost choked! Couldn't give him the ten spot quick enough.

Agree 100% all the way around. Delica's and Griptilians are great EDC knives. I'm a Spyderco guy myself.
NGK is also the best online store to order from, bar none.
Spend your money on nicer blade steel, not gimmicks like assisted opening. You will get a much better (and longer lasting) tool.

I would give my vote toany of the Ken Onion knives. I personally have a chive, scallion, and leek, and carry each ot them based on where I am going, doing that day. Also, my leek has startled a few people, as the serrated version is kinda mean looking up close and personal.

So far I'm liking the Mini-Griptilian...the all black model with a straight edge. Is there any difference in quality between the satin and black steel finish? Or is it purely cosmetic?

I spent years looking for the perfect folder and came on this Kershaw http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=KERSHAW&ID=3563789&ref=GB
and love it. Its my daily carry knife and the speed assist is great, once you use it you canot go back.

Take a good look at the Spyderco Delica and Endura with the wave feature. It's licensed to them by Emerson, opens faster than an auto, and still has the hole for traditional opening.

I just recently purchased this SOG Aegis Tanto. Does anybody have experience with these? I bought it because it goes nicely with my kimber digi camo. Seems like a good blade but it also has a lot of mechanics hopefuly it will work out.

I would definetly look into the Kershaw's. I work as a firefighter/paramedic and use mine on a regular basis. Holds up very well and usually around $35

I ended up grabbing a Kershaw Scallion today. Cabelas had them for around $35. Almost went with the leek, but felt it was a little long and might be uncomfortable. The Chive was also way too small...I wanted something with a more substantial blade.
Feels good, easy to open, carries well...should make a good addition to my carry piece, and let me carry something in bars, etc. when I can't have my gun.

I would highly suggest a good can of spray over your Kershaw for a 2nd choice defense weapon.
There are no winners in knife fights, and the vast majority of people (including myself) have no formal training on how to properly use one. I don't want to fight with anything I'm unsure of. That, and the knife you have is not an ideal fighting blade to begin with. Spray the whole crowd and GTFO. Let everyone else figure out the problem when their face stops burning.

05-31-2009, 12:10 AM
I'm actually looking into some training regarding using the knife, and hopefully transitions from pistol to knife (or vice versa).
TFin04
05-31-2009, 12:36 AM
That works too. More training and options are always good.
Then again, a little birdy told me some people just carry their guns anyway and don't worry about it. Never met somebody like that though......:poke:

Do you know of any good knife trainers around? Maybe something that incorporates some basic hand to hand, like disarming? Not looking for any Bruce Lee stuff, just enough to make me not fight like a girl scout.
