The Michigan DNR has a regulation stating individuals are not allowed to have a firearm in possession (except for using blanks) when dog training. Does the right to open carry override the DNR regulation?

Only with a CPL and it had better stay in the holster so nobody can wonder what it is being used for.

Rooster, this makes no sense to me.
I am very interested in reading this regulation. Can you post a link?

This is the laws on training dogs, but it says other then a "shotgun, pistol, or revolver" so it may only apply to rifles

He was talking about a handgun loaded with something other than blanks.
He cannot do that except under the license of a CPL unless it is during hunting season and he has the applicable license.

DD, I appreciate your post and I do not dispute your answer. Now with the wolf delisting...and the legislation waiting in the wings to make it legal to defend your property (a dog for example) it seems reasonable to have open carry when afield with your dog. I have been around a fair number of wolves and never had a problem, but they were either lone wolves or a pair. Never been at close quarters with a pack. Seems like a logical thinking person could make a reasonable case for open carry when in the field with your dog.

And how much an hour are you possibly be willing to pay for legal representation if a CO doesn't buy into your argument afield?
The law is quite clear.
I suppose that if your dog was on a leash that you could say that you are not training.
But, if you are training, you had better have that pistol loaded with blanks or you might just be cited.....wolves howling or not.

It's always small game season, get a small game license and I think you would be set, while walking afield. If you are training a dog(s) and firing a gun blanks are needed per DNR rules. You can shoot English sparrow, rock doves, starlings and I think groundhogs year round.

And if carrying under authority of hunting license...then you run into another issue about the dogs....not to mention the necessity to be wearing orange.
If you want to carry year round....get a CPL....it is by far the cheapest way to achieve that goal.

It sure does make it easier.

I'm not lobbying for the right to self-defense when dog training, or the apperance of dog training. Just expressing a point of view.
