HI, I'M HAWKEYE50ML.
I've been shooting a muzzle loader for a little more than a year, and I love it!!!
I now have two to choose from. The newest one is a CVA Wolf 50cal. Break Open Inline. I won it in a raffle 2 weeks ago at a wild game charity dinner. It was the very last drawing of the night. The rifle came as a starter set, including a 3x9, Bushnell scope.
I was surprised at the accuracy of the Wolf using only the iron sights. Shooting at my 25yd., backyard range, the rifle groups at 1.25-1.5 inches consistently. Since this will be my wife's Smokepole, the scope won't be mounted. She has scope/eye alignment issues with scopes.
Now for my toy...
I shoot a T/C Encore 209x50, Blued/Walnut. Atop sits a Leupold 4.5x14x40, 30mm Side Paralax adjustment. The Reticle is the Varminter Ranging type.
For propellant, I'm now using BLACKHORN 209. I range the charge between 70-90grs. I like the non-water cleanup best...
ok, I like the increased accuracy the best. Followed by the Hopp's No9 cleanup.
As for my favorite projectile, I use T/C's 200gr. Poly Tipped Shockwave Sabots.

:welcome: to MGO!
That's all I have to add, I don't have, nor have every had the pleasure of playing with black powder. Hopefully, i will get a chance to rectify that in the near future.

Thanks for the reply.
I never thought I'd like it as much as I do. I've reloaded several calibers and always hated all the case prep time. I finally realized if I eliminated the case, I could consentrate on charge, and bullet combinations to find the sweet spot. And it worked. Once I started using the oil based powder, my clean up decreased, and my accuracy improved.

I've got three smokepoles that I need to get to the range. Maybe we can meet up at Island Lake Shooting Range and spend the day "smokin' them out".
OH yeah............welcome.

Huh? I didn't understand a single thing you said
I just don't understand them new fangled things. I could never figure out where the cock was so I could check the flint, and I haven' figured out where to put the prime'n powder. Everything else looks like it would work the same. I just can't figure the ignition part out. I think I'll just stick with my old 75 cal Brown Bess. I can reach 100yards if I have to. But you don't get any real long shots here in the southern Thumb area so that'il do. And that BIG ol' ball drops em like they was pole axed. Then I can load 'er up with #4 and set the dog loose and chase rabbit and only have one gun to clean. Been use'n this old smooth bore for about 25 yr' now, it has served me just fine.
Well, Welcome aboard. And good luck with that new fangled contraption ya got there.

welcome
MLs are great i shoot one of 4 TCs
2 omegas 2 encores (plus a new encore with slug barrel)
im shooting in 1 omega and 2 encores 2 777 pellets, with 295 gr powerbelts
awesome accuracy poor blood trails so i now shoot them to drop on spot makes life easier
my one omega is 110gr lose pyrodex with 250 shockwaves dead nuts at 150
im thinking of going to the BH209 as soon as i use up the 777 pellets
i also have a breechplug for the omega that is milled for a .25 acp case (no more small primers to deal with plus the lack of a big crud ring is a bonus (no issue i have heard with crud ring from BH209)
pm me i have a muzzleloader site you will like

Thanks for the range info(Island Lake). Check out the Multilakes Conservation Club in Commerce. It's on Newton Rd. I haven't shot there yet, but it's comming up. The concept of three distances from one bench position intriques me.
Great first post! I just picked up my first M/L a couple of weeks ago. It's a second hand Thompson Black Diamond 45 cal setup for 209 primer. It has adapters for 3 different types of primer but I'm going to start w/ the 209.
I haven't shot it yet, I've just been cleaning it up. The bore was the fun part but it cleaned up nicely. I was planing on siting it in closer to summer time but your post may have inspired me to get a head start. I picked up some primers pellets last week. I think the pellets are 50 gr so I'll start w/ 100 gr and 195 soft tip sabbots.

To Rolex Dr.,
A few things I found to improve my accuracy overall since I started shooting my Encore a year ago.
Before I shot the first load, I used a numbered drill to measure the Flash Hole, and the larger pre-flash hole tube. I know that didn't come across correctly. I'm refering to the tube area ahead of the primer, before the flash hole.
Anyway, My Flash-hole opening is a #69. I forget the other size right now, it 's in my range box. You get the point I'm sure.
As with any accuracy shooting, consistency in procedure will greatly improve down-range results. I figured if I could send the same volume of flame to the charge each time, accuracy would improve. It did. See, I shoot my Encore as a Target Rifle. I have other rifles but I really like the way the load and performance can be changed at the bench.
The next sugestion is for you to switch to the Blackhorn209. Not to sound like a product rep, but the stuff beats the Triple 7 for easier clean up between shots.
The container says between shot swabbing isn't required, and I would agree for a Hunting situation, however, at the range where time isn't an issue, a single swab with No.9 gave me better consistancy. I guess because the Hopp's breaks down the residue faster than any of the water based products I used with the 777.
I did shoot 15 shots without a swab to see if thier claims were true, and found after the first load, the rest were a little tighter than the first, but didn't get any tighter beyond the second. It' well worth a try.

I just bought a TC Triumph .50 cal magnum that I have not even pulled out of the box yet. I am in process of trying to find a scope for it and starting to lean toward the nikon omega BDC for it but have not decided yet.
I am really looking foward in getting into the muzzleloaders.
I'm a slug gun type of guy, but we'll see how this shoots. Hopefully
I bought a good one that will last awhile. Again, I am new and know
nothing about these things and figure I would learn as I go.

The thing that surprised me the most is that most people who own a ml, don't shoot them after the season. I have several diferent rifles in the safe, but enjoy my ML Encore the most. It is a lot less work then all the processes involved with reloading cased cartridges.

I shoot a CVA Kodiak nickel 50 cal. I took a deer with it last December(my first with a muzzle loader). I used to shoot triple 7, but now shoot American pioneer; I like the triple 7 better, I really don't like the American pioneer. It's pretty accurate at 100yds with the open sights.

the drilling out the plus is something i have read about but not done yet i have had decent luck but about shot 3-4 its gets very tough almost impossible to load
i did find out that the regular 209 primers are HOT i used the 209 ML primers (the remington ones) and have less of an issue the 25 acp is even better due to pistol primes burning cooler
i think im going to try the BH this summer i need to get a new bullet the powerbelts i think im pushing too fast and they EXPLODED on a deer we lost a deer 3 years ago (solid lung shot I saw it at 20 yards and we lost the blood and then jumped her 3 hours later and she took off across a open field we watched her run 3/4 mile and gone in a wood lot) and i said never again so now i break their necks so they fall over the dang bullets are so accurate i hate to switch (plus i got 200 at walmart soo cheap)
i wish the BH came in pellets it makes life so easy

I'm familliar with the 25ACP ignition solution. I was using the Vari-Flame adapters. They utilize #4Bench rest primers. Same concept as the 25acp's, except they use a brass primer cup to hold the primer.
These worked better than the standard 209ML primers. They reduced the build-up near the breachplug.
All this improvement was made mute by switching to the BH209. You got to try it. Also try a lighter bullet.
I have found the 200g. Sabots (T/C) atop 70-90g BH good medicine.
I can't get approval to try this at the range, but in my yard at 25yds, 80g/200g Sabots punch through 5.5" of compressed yellow pages.

thanks hawkeye
another board i post on (its all muzzleloaders) are saying the same
i just have too many to scrap and they shoot accurate
but trying the new stuff is fun
my uncle in his omega is 225 or 250 sst with 90 grains loose and its wicked at 125-150 yards
he threaded the needle this year 80 yards thru the woods at an 8pt the beeded down by him for over an hour

I was told that after 10 post, I could post pics. Anyone help out with why I can't?
Just a plain jane 1/8" drill bit is all ya need to clear your breech plug. Just spin it in by hand. If the build-up is too heavy, you may need pliers or vise grips to hold on to it. Just don't get carried away and remove any metal from the end of the flash channel. You will be suprised how much your accuracy/ignition is affected by the narrowing of the channel. I usually run the bit in after 8-10 shots, during a long range session.

If I may, a freind of mine's flash hole was bigger than mine. I just happen to use the numbered drills to prove the size of burner orifices for furnaces. My point was that each shot of powder reduced the flash hole significantly from one shot to the next. Therefore reducing, and changing the flame charactor.
What ever fits, should be used at the range for between shot prep.

I can't believe this. I don't even own a smokepole, but here I am responding to several of your posts. :lol:I was told that after 10 post, I could post pics. Anyone help out with why I can't?This is my copy/paste for that question;Photos have to be hosted somewhere on the 'net. Contributing members can host on this site, but it can also be a personal site, or one of the free sites such as Photobucket, Webshots, etc. You then put the link to the photo in your message. It can be done both as a link to click on, or show the picture in the post.
The default upon joining didn't give some posting options. Don't know if that has changed, so you might want to go to the bottom of the “edit options” page in your “User CP” (Control Panel,) and select “Standard Editor.” This will give you the link, quote, smilies, and other features.
Couple of notes since I originally wrote that, both because of a policy change and confusion. You are already past the ten post minimum now required to post pics and/or active links. Contributing member is one who has joined, (link on home page,) and paid dues, not, as some thought, contributed otherwise.
Contributing member gives you a voice in the running of this org, doubles the size of your PM box, allows access to several "member only" forums, and, of course, allows you to host pictures on here.
Plus, as someone noted the other day on another thread, having an MGO card satisfies the "club affiliation" for making purchases at the CMP North store.
Roger
Good point Hawheye, the 1/8" works on t/c's and a few others. One should use the correct size for their particular breech plug.
