View Full Version : .45GAP in a .45ACP

I read on a post in here that .45GAP can be fired in a .45ACP pistol. I have read other places that this is not true due to differnt size primers and casing. I was looking for some clarification. I didn't think it was possable but it would be nice since I have some laying around lol.

Thanks

NO

You cannot shoot the GAP in an ACP, or vice versa. While they are similar, they are not interchangeable. The GAP has a shorter OAL, and may have different case specs elsewhere as well. They do shoot the same bullet.

Shooting one cartridge in the other gun would be bad news. Be careful when shooting two different cartridges in the same gun. Some can do it without issue...others obviously cannot.

Here is a good resource for different chamberings on one gun. (http://www.saami.org/Unsafe_Combinations.cfm) I doubt the list is all inclusive, so be careful before trying different combos...when in doubt, don't do it. Kabooms can happen, and those typically aren't very fun ;)

Thats what I thought, but i read differntly on a thread here so I wanted to be sure. The rimmed area looks like a differnt size too not to mention the OAL.

Thanks

Inside The .45 GAP
The .45 GAP gives performance equal to commercial .45 ACP personal-defense and law enforcement loads with 185- and 200-grain bullets but in a shorter overall case format..

Not suppose to but I have read threads where ammo was mixed and the GAP did fire in the ACP....

Yeah I fired a 9mm in my 357 Sig by accident. Just b/c you can doesn't mean you should.

Another common question I’ve heard asked when shooters first learn of the .45 GAP is whether it can be fired in .45 ACP chambers. The answer is one of those not-so-simple ones: No, but sometimes it might. Both the .45 ACP and the .45 GAP headspace on the case mouth, so the .45 GAP won’t reach the chamber headspace index in a .45 ACP chamber.

On the other hand, the taper of the two cases is essentially the same so a .45 GAP might not slide too far forward in a really tight-chambered .45 ACP for the firing pin to reach the primer. But the .45 GAP rim is rebated, remember, so a .45 ACP extractor may not hook on, unless it’s got a really deep lateral reach. The real answer to the question is...maybe. If you drop a .45 GAP into a .45 ACP pistol it might go bang. Sometimes. And maybe extract and eject, too. From some guns. It is not a good idea--under any circumstances.

I'll be trying it in my S&W 625 (45 ACP, moonclips) and will post the results here.

I've heard a lot of people have good luck with it, plus some competition shooters do it as well. I guess .45 gap is a lot easier to get on most metal moon clips as well.

The nice thing is I won't have to pick up the brass.

DOH!! They'll be on the clips, it doesn't matter.

It shouldn't be any different than 44 special in a 44 mag.

Yep.

What moonclips are you using? I just ordered 200 from Ranch Products...should keep me going for the rest of my natural life.

I got a bunch, I'm not sure who made them. I got them on Ebay cheap. I can't tell the difference between them and the wilsons. I can fill and ammo can with loaded ammo and still ahve a buttload left.

a revolver you can

Potentially headspace issues in most guns is very dangerous, the danger in a .45 acp due to low pressure is minimal. Nothing like the 5.7 gun that went kaboom a while back and tore the guys hand up http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2008/05/fn-fiveseven-kaboom.html its happened a few times with those.

Double charge a .45 and it will crack your USP. Seen pics of that too. http://brookstactical.com/media/ghkb41.jpg

A .45 gap literally to avoid fears of never being able to aquire brass can be made with a case trimmer from .45 acp without any work beyond that from what I understand. So if you have a good extractor I suppose it would fire it, but would chew up the bullet pretty bad upon impact with the rifling portion of the barrel. I don't know why you'd want to put MORE expensive ammo in a gun. I also think that minute impact would put a lot of stress on your frame and possibly overpressurize your chamber, probably not but the potential is there at least to shorten the life of your handgun minutely.

Haha I bought it on accident at a gun show a few weeks ago, musta been in with the 45ACP boxes and I didn't look too close when I grabbed it. I was trying to sell or trade it when I saw the other comments, so I thought I would check.

We've shot a few 9mm's through our .40 cal pistols :)

When I say "we" I mean a few retarted officers that can't friggin tell the difference between 9mm and 40s&w rounds even though the can they took them out of was CLEARLY marked 9mm, on a shelf off the loading table (the 40 was on the table for them to use) and a different color casing AND bullet!! My God it's amazing more of our idiots don't get killed with as little detail to attention as they pay!
I will say once they were fired the casing came out kind of neat looking, sort of like a 357sig casing :) :shake:
