I know a person can carry on his/her property without a cpl , but does a lawn tractor fall under the motor vehicle part ... Say a guy is mowing his yard and has his weapon on his side .. Is he legal ?

You may openly carry on or off your property. No CPL necessary (CEZ's still in effect).

If you're on your property, you can sit in your car, on your tractor, on your motorcycle, anywhere on your own private property openly OR concealed. Again, no CPL necessary.

Right, but I said on or off your property, without qualifying it correctly.

And the MSP. Received this from Sgt. Deasy.

I sent him this:

Dear Sgt. Deasy:

This has come up several times. Can a person that owns property say 150 acres have a loaded handgun in his vehicle while on his property? I realize game laws come into play, but if it's just for defense can a person do this? The law allows then to have concealed handguns on their person and in their house/business if they own the property, but I'm not sure about a vehicle. Or for that matter OC on a ATV, snowmobile, dirt bike, etc., on their own property.

Thanks again,
Brian

subjectRe: Concealed carry in your vehicle on your property?

Mr. Jeffs,

MCL 750.227(2) governs carrying a concealed pistol in a vehicle. That subsection contains an exception for a person carrying a pistol in their vehicle in "his or her dwelling house, place of business, or on other land possessed by the person." Therefore, a person can carry a pistol in a vehicle in the circumstances you describe.
Sincerely,
