I just returned from dunhams, where I bought a Remington 597 .22 for my kid. I only purchased a firearm from them because I had $120 worth of store credit. Anyway, I get home and remove the trigger lock and pull the bolt back and the damn extractor fell off in my hand!

Luckily Dunhams agrred to exchange the rifle for a different one if I make it back there today. I would advise staying away from this rifle, It should have been a sign when the other gun (same Model) I had in my hand fell apart.

I think I am going to go with the 10/22. Any thoughts?

Never had problem with my 597 for the 7-8 yrs i owned it. Seems to be trouble free for it's new owner also.

How did the other one fell apart?

The first one I had in my hand the handle on the bolt fell out and this one the extractor fell out. It seemed like a nice gun for $200 it even came with a 3x9x32 scope.

Well, my youngest boy was home from school so I took him with me. He picked out a Camo Savage, model 64, I believe. It was the same price as the Remington but did not include the scope so I got suckered into a scope as well. Small price to pay to recruit another "gut nut" at a young age.

How old is your kid? Ruger makes the 10/22, in a short version.

Woops, seen he picked out a Savage. Enjoying the sport with your kids, is awesome!

I had two 597's at separate times once, and found them to be reliable and nice shooters, but just Prefer the 10/22.

Maybe you just lucked out and bought a "built on monday or friday" gun.

I think the guns at dunhams take alot of abuse. They are removed from the diplays and locked in a safe eveynight. Their stuff is often kinda banged up. Like I said though, the had two 597's and both fell apart. I am kinda turned off on the madel now.

I bought a 597 for the occasional plinking. Shot fine until recently when the bolt handle flew off and now only fits in there loosely. I will be contacting Remington for warranty.

If you go to the Remington website there are 4 or 5 locations in Mi. that you can send it too for warranty. William's in Davison in one and there was a place in Grand Rapids. I did make a phone call and they told me to ship it directly to them.

Was it the extractor of the bolt handle?
The handle on the 597 can pull out and snap in very easily. I heard it was a safety feature, you unload the gun and remove the handle so that no one can cock the rifle.

the bolt handle will now come out on its own.. so I think there is an issue.

I just picked up a 10/22 and I absolutely love it. It was my first choice when it came time to buy a .22 rifle. Great quality fire arm, they have tons of options and accessories for them. You really can’t go wrong with a 10/22.

If I had been buying one for myself I would have gone with the 10/22 but he picked out the one he wanted. The Savage looks and feel like a quality little rifle. I will let you guys know after a trip to the range.

On a side note... A few years ago I bought my oldest boy a Mossburg Plinkster .22 for $89.00 Even that gun turned out great, over 5k rounds w/o issue.
