I went out looking for a new knife yesterday, only to be disappointed.
Rocky's in Burton always has a good selection but their prices seem to always be high (Like $30+ over online prices).
Gander Mountain has a terrible selection of knives. They had a row or two of shelves with prepackaged Gerber/Buck multi tools and a few of the lower end Leathermans, and then they had 2 glass cabinets with a large assortment of generic knives, a few Gerber and Buck knives, and 4 or 5 different Benchmade knives that didn't look like anything special.
I went to the new Dunhams and they had one cabinet with maybe 20 different low end multi tools in it and one or two generic pocket knives and that was it.
Anyways, my mother is looking to buy me a new knife for my birthday. I'd prefer a 3 inch Spyderco Wave Delica or Endura, but I'm open to other brands/knives.. I'm thinking my best bet may be the check Bass Pro Shops in Auburn Hills, or is there anywhere else in the Flint area that has a good selection of knives?

I ended up biting the bullet and going to Rocky's. My buddy works there and he gave me a good price on a Benchmade 585 Mini Barrage.

Next time you want to buy a decent knife in Flint...save yourself the frustration; stay home and use the internet. That goes for anything else decent that you want to get, as well.

Thanks, its an awesome knife! I really wanted to get a knife that was 3 inches or under for legality reasons. Especially when I get my CPL and start carrying a gun I want to have everything legal.
Like I said before I was going for a Spyderco, but this knife was just too nice not to get!

I'm well aware of the deals and convenience of the internet, however, I wanted to get a knife quickly without having to wait 3 or 4 days to receive it. I ended up spending about $10 more than I would have buying this knife online plus playing for shipping.

I'm not a lawyer, but the knife laws in MI leave a lot open for debate in regards to blade length.

Regardless of what the state laws say, theres plenty of cities in this state with local ordinances that say 3" or under.

Does preemption apply like it does for firearms?

Does preemption apply like it does for firearms?
I do not believe so. Theres a thread somewhere around here where they talk about this..

Nope. Every time you drive past some governmental boundary in this state you could be subject to different knife laws. Just to be as safe as possible I keep my EDC knives under 3"...but even that won't always keep you out of the trick bag.

As I understand it, NO law can trump state law. Not just gun laws.
And the state law says, to not go armed with a blade more than 3 inches for unlawful purpose.
As I read that, it means I could carry a sword as long as I have a lawful purpose.

There isn't really any preemption regarding knives, and I'm not aware of any state law regarding 3" blades. Municipalities can "add to" state law unless otherwise preempted by additional state law. My rub has always been that if they are "adding to" a law in one respect, they are detracting from it in another respect. But...that's neither here nor there.
In the end, municipalities can indeed make their own laws regarding knives...or at least they think that they can. In Dearborn for instance I've heard that it's virtually illegal to carry any knife on your person.
That's how I understand it anyway.

the state prison for not more than 5 years or by a fine

Exactly. There is a specific state law regarding how much knife you can't carry with unlawful intent. But there is no state law specifying how much knife you can carry with lawful intent. As far as the state is concerned your tacticool pocket pig sticker can have a 12" blade as long as you don't carry it with unlawful intent. So municipalities can, and do, add to that law by passing ordinances limiting how much knife you can carry with lawful intent.
