Assuming it has been through a war or two, I would begin with a thorough cleaning using dish detergent, Simple Green, etc. When the wood is clean, and dry, perform a thorough inspection for cracks or other defects. If it is solid, then I would be steaming out as many dents as possible. Check online for process if you are not familiar with steaming out dented wood. Next, you need to get the excess oil out of the stock. Again, google for detailed info getting old oils out of the wood. Once this is all done and the stock is dry, get your oil of choice, some wet/dry sandpaper in various grits from 150 to 360 or so and, beginning with the coarsest grit, keeping some oil on the wood while sanding and have at it. Use something to back the paper so your flat surfaces stay flat. Sand with one grit, then wipe and let dry overnight before going to the next grit. Once it looks the way you want, or the best that particular stick of wood is going to get, stop and enjoy. Dozens of variations are outlined in the Brownells Gunsmith Kinks books if you want to do some deep research.

Sand with the grain only.
