What slug ammo do you experienced deer hunters use? I made a visit to Cabela's today and there are so many choices. Who has had good/bad experience with which brands/size? Thanks in advance for the help!

Shotguns are funny things, what may shoot good in one won't shoot for crap in another, even the same make and model. Best thing to so is buy a box of different brands and loads and try them out. make sure you buy for either a smooth bore or a rifled slug barrel.

btw what are you shooting. I have found that in my particular guns the cheap stuff usually groups the best. Remington sluggers at 2 dollars a box.

What ranges do you plan on shooting at. under 50 or longer and is your gun a made specifically for slugs. like the mossberg bolt action slug gun.

Give me some info and I can probably get you in the ballpark on the ammo.

also what guage.

If you decide to buy any ammo you will need sabot slugs because of the rifled barrel.

We stock lightfields.

Every barrel is different. You still have to buy a number of boxes of different ammo and shoot is at a 50 yard target off a sandbag or something even more stable. What groups best is your ammo. It's that simple.

not really marine, me and kevin tested almost 9 slug guns this year! i tested 3 of my own ! with over 150 bucks worth of slugs and guess what every gun we shot shot lightfields the best hands down! like i said if here gun doesnt like them ill buy here whatever it does! since we have 2 guns just like sandies i will take that bet! but you are correct in your thoughts since are 3.5 inch mossbergs are sighted for 150yds! with 3.5 inch lightfields!

I have a Remington 870 wingmaster that I've always used the Remington Sluggers in (1 oz).
Best shot so far was 1 shot that got a doe at 225 yds.

It's not the ammo, it's the shooter ;)

As far as the old Foster style slugs. I have found each gun usually likes a certain brand.
I have a 24 year old New Haven by Mossberg with the smoth bore slug barrel. It likes the Winchester rifled slugs.

My Dad has a old Remington wingmaster with the smoth bore slug barrel, it also like the Winchester slugs. One year he decided to buy some Remington slugs for it because they were cheaper. Guess what they cost him a trophy Buck. When we came up for a break he said somthing was wrong with the gun. So we put up a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood and could not even hit it at 50 yds with the Remington slugs. So I took out a Winchester put it in the gun at hit the bullseye. I then put in 5 more and did the same thing. All the shots with the Winchester slugs were free hand.

Now my Grandfater had a old Mossberg 500 with the smooth bore slug barrel that would shoot everthing we ever tried to shoot out of it. It would shoot anyslug we put in it with the same results.

So a person needs to do some testing and what ever your gun shoots best would be what I used.

As far as my best shot with a slug gun.

It was 180 paces. I shot a doe on the run with my old Mossberg. Down she went. Then she got up and started again. so I shoot he once more.
Same deal. On the trird shot she was done. But first I misssed her a couple times because I did not have the angle on the dangle right. When I got that right I did not miss.At that distance the slug was all but petered out as far as power. That was about 20 years ago.

Now I use a Mossberg 835 with 3.5 inch Lightfields. It works a lot better.

I'm going to bring my Remington 870 and Baretta semi-auto to Deputy's tactical carbine class with a sample of slugs that I use to see about some of this accuracy stuff.
