What kind of Comp. Pistol?
Ever tried shooting bowling pins off a table while being timed on a stopwatch?

Bowling pin matches will start again in mid September at Peter's Gun Range on Gratiot in Roseville. Normally every other Sunday through May.

Watch for announcement by Alex Vitek, John Perfetti, or myself in the next 3 - 4 weeks, or PM one of us for details.

Axeman,

There are a lot of variations of competitive pistol shooting. If you want to try IPSC, also called action pistol, run n' gun, combat shooting, come out to Livingston Gun Club, www.livingstongunclub.org, on the 2nd Sunday of the month and give it a try. We welcome new shooters and you'll get some help getting started. You need a pistol, 4 mags - 10 rounders or equivelent, mag pouches and a holster. We usually have 6 or seven stages set-up and shoot 150 rounds.

I just started action pistol shooting this year. The best advice I can give is JUST DO IT. Just go to a match somewhere, anywhere, sign up, and tell them you've never done this kind of shooting before. In my experience I haven't met anyone who wasn't willing to help out a new shooter. Expect safety to be you utmost concern your first few times out. You need to learn the ins and outs of that first. After you've got that down, really very simple, you'll be spending your time having the time of your life and improving your shooting. Also expect to make some mistakes the first few times out, everyone does.

The equipment will depend on what specific sport you want to shoot. You can shoot IDPA and IPSC with a box stock pistol of 9mm and up. You need a good holster, at least 4 mags, 2 mag pouches for IDPA and 4 for IPSC. You'll need about 100 rounds for an IDPA match and about 200 for an IPSC match.

Sorry, but if you could please tell me what IDPS and IPCS are...?

I have a G27 and an Uncle Mikes Paddle holster...Will that do?

Will the G27 and U Mikes holster do for the bowling pin match?

IDPA = International Defensive Pistol Association. They concentrate on defensive tactics in a competition. Reload behind cover & draw from concealment. Pistols are limited in size.

IPSC = Interantional pistol shooting conrgress. No requirements to reload behind cover or draw from concealment. Empahsis on speed.

Roger's right, shooting pins is a ball. Don't know much about the others.

That will do for IDPA but you will also need a dual mag pouch and at the very least 3 mags. Four is easier but three will do. Information on IDPA can be found at http://www.idpa.com

The best place to I've seen for IDPA newbies is at the Linden Sportsman's Club - http://www.lsdpc.homestead.com/ - on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm. It's an instructional practice league and is geared for beginners and masters alike.

Information on IPSC style shooting can be found at the USPSA website - http://www.uspsa.org/

You can shoot your G27 in IPSC as well. The stages tend to be about 30 rounds so you'll need enough mags and mag pouches to carry 30 rounds on you and in the gun plus a few extras. If you're like me you'll need lots of extras. As John already said you can shoot IPSC at the Livingston Gun Club on the 2nd Sunday of each month.

You will not need the holster to shoot pins. There are other matches/competitions that will not require the holster.

What you have to do is follow up on all the suggestion you have gotten so far. You would be surprised how little equipment you might need to get started.

Once started, though, some of the games do require a bit more than the basic investment.

and when you do start getting some of the "more than basic" needed equipment...you dont have to go buy the best and so on...start cheaper...work up.takes time......if you liek one shoot better thanthe rest..exel in it..do your best.and invest in that style of shooting......

boy this is an old post but let me add my 2 cents...

paint a coffee can bottom black. set it somewhere about shoulder high. move back 50 yards. shoot 10 rounds at it in 10 minutes. one handed.

bullseye isnt 'in vogue' much anymore but it definitely takes concentration and muscle development.

another game is PPC. 60 rounds shot in increments of 6 and multiples of 6 out to 50 yards.

most of these are only shot out to 25 with reduced targets.

ive had lots of fun with these disciplines...
