Police: Residents Reportedly Spot Lion In Local Neighborhood
Officials Unable To Confirm Type Of Animal

POSTED: 3:50 p.m. EDT September 17, 2003

Van Buren Township and Animal Control officers have had three calls in the past two days from residents reporting the sighting of a large cat, described as a lion.

The area of the sightings was in the Michigan Avenue and Dellor Street area located in the northwest section of the township, according to police.

Authorities have investigated the area of the sightings but have not yet been able to find the animal.

Animal Control has reportedly set traps in the area of the sightings.

Police emphasized they did not want to cause a state of panic among residents in the community but wanted to notify residents to keep their eyes open.

Anyone who has spotted an animal similar to the one described has been asked to contact the Van Buren Township Police Department at (734) 699-8930.

I thought all the lions were in Macomb County this year according to what I read somewhere a few weeks ago.

I'm pretty sure I saw one in Roscommon County 4 years ago. It was late dusk and whatever I saw had a tail about as long as the body, about the size of large German Shepard. It didn't give me much of a look but it definitly wasn't a coyote or wolf. I mentioned the sighting to the DNR District 2 office and they sorta ignored it. Whatever.
