View Full Version : How do you store your firearms?

Tonight, like most other nights, I visited the gun safe - removed my carry rig, checked to make sure the revolver was loaded, replaced it in the holster and put in back in the safe. Then I took my semiauto, removed it from the holster, removed checked and reinserted the magazine, slipped it back in the holster and now it sits right next to me as I watch a little tv.
This got me to thinking ... how do you store your guns? Loaded? Unloaded? Ammo separate? Holstered? Safeties on/off? Do you use trigger locks in a safe? I can't believe I'm the only one who stores 'ready'.
Why do I store loaded? Since they are kept in a safe (and only I have the combination) I see no safety risk with unauthorized handling. Secondly, if I need them in the middle of the night, I don't want the added step to make ready. I do keep the safeties 'on' those pieces that have them. No trigger locks are kept on the guns. And I keep them holstered.
Oh - if you're wondering why I check my carry gun when I take it off? Or check a gun when I remove it from the safe? Habit. Each time I pick up a gun, I check it.

All firearms in my safe are stored unloaded. My carry handgun's are always loaded and at night they are in the drawer next to my bed ready if needed. Since there are no kids at my home and my wife knows they are loaded and how to use them, I don't feel the need to unload and lock them up. Larry

Guns in the safe are unloaded. No reason to keep them loaded if they’re in the safe. I have 2 Gunvault safes strategically placed around the house that hold my carry gun and a HD gun.

One handgun, one mousegun and one shotgun "at the ready," one AR-15 loaded in the safe, everything else unloaded in the safe.
Oh, and one shotgun loaded, unchambered under the girlfriends bed.
Edit: No minors in either house.
Two loaded 9mm's on each night stand by the bed, one for me, one for my better half. Tactical flashlights on the stands also.
One AR-15 with full mag and one in the chamber. Used to have a shotgun, but after taking Deputies Tactical Carbine class, he convinced me the AR is much better for home defense.
A wilderness instructor belt with one glock 17 round mag and a AR mag. This does not work too well, so my better half has plans to make me a pair of shorts with mag carriers sewn on. Need something that is very fast to slip on that will carry my accessories.
I also have electronic hearing protection ready. Firearms going off in a room are very loud.
No kids in the house either.

I don't think posting how or where my firearms are stored on a public message board is a good idea.

I can understand your thinking considering you're a dealer but for me personally, I don't think there is any reason to worry about it. If you look at most of the postings everyone seems to basically keep their firearms stored in the same places at the same time of the day(bedtime). It doesn't seem like much of a surprise to me, just common sense in case you need them. I"m not worried about someone getting my address off the message board. There's a much more likelyhood that some lowlife would break into your home by shear luck of the draw. Just my opinion!

I like to soak a leather pouch in saltwater, then wring it out. I then slip my pistol in the damp pouch and put it in a plastic tupperware type container. I then place that in a cool, damp spot in the basement.
Ammo I like to store in a cardboard box and set the box in the garage, usually in a rusty bucket filled with kerosene.
Just kidding there, folks

Just my 2 cents, but putting a loaded gun in your nightstand next to your bed at night seems a little risky - its probably the first place a bad guy is going to look if he happens to break in your house and get into your bedroom (assuming you don't wake up first a meet him with a little surprise).

No chance of this happening, I have a little yapper(dog) that alerts you to every noise louder than a mouse fart!!!
