View Full Version : Charter 2000
I'm looking for a hammerless wheel gun. The auto's are nice but I feel more comfortable with a point and shoot piece. Seen the Undercover .38 at Charter website. They appear to be well warranteed and I know they have been around for 30 years. Question is, Are they any good? I haven't seen much on this or other boards, one way or the other. Any advice is welcome, and thanks in advance.

I would recommend the S&W model 642. You will spend a little more to get this gun, but it will have value if you decide to sell it.
I am very much un-impressed with the charter arms stuff. The company has come and gone several times in the past 30 years.
If you are interested in a S&W contact me for pricing.

FWIW, I can vouch for Kurt's prices and service. His store is way cool and you'll probably end up buying some esoteric piece of memorabilia as well.
Kurt, the K 22 is still shooting pretty. Love that gun!
Any more AR lowers?

Temporarily out of AR lowers, but they are ordered and should arrive soon.

I'll second Kurt's recommendation of the S&W 642. I have one and it is an excellent choice. It will disappear in your pocket but with +P 38's loads is more than enough gun for those close in encounters.

I'll third that recommendation. 642 or the 442 (one is blue, one is stainless). Corbon 38 Special +P's are manageable in that little frame and are the hottest 38 loads I've seen so far.

Ditto to Kurt's recommendation. I have been carrying one for a year now. 15 oz. empty, very comfortable to wear. No problem to shoot with Federal 129-gr. Hydra-Shok +P loads... very accurate... almost shockingly so. I changed the mainspring and recoil-block (trigger return) spring for better-quality (lighter pull) Wolfe springs.
Forget the Charter Arms. We won't even carry them in our shop. Nor Taurus... we had one blow up on a customer using factory loads. Stick to Smith & Wesson. Your life may depend on it.
The S & W models 649 or 638 might be worth considering also. They are the bodyguard style J frame with the shrouded hammer, it will not snag, but still allow single action firing. The 649 is the standard stainless steel version approx 25 oz., the 638 is the airweight approx 15 oz.
I do believe I have been 'convinced'. Thanks for advice. Email has been sent, Kurt.
