I know its just a movie but......The guy killed a shark with handgun(looked like a Glock) while underwater(i know i know...why would the shark be on land!?)

Anyhow the question is....will a handgun work under water?

With out blowing up? especially a Plastic framed handgun.

And what would be the range?

Just wondering....JR

Any one have any practical experience or actual experience?

Thanks....

Maybe, but I think it would make you deaf.

If it was indeed a Glock, there are factory replacement parts that will enable them to reliably fire underwater. They cost about 4 bucks or so, and fit all models of Glocks. Basically they are called marine spring cups, and they allow water to flow around the firing pin.

I believe the Glock model 17 (9mm) was at some time issued to some military group (seals?) and a requirement was that they fuctioned underwater, or filled with water, etc....

As to going deaf, the sound of a gun going off underwater is no louder than one above water, only thing different is that the sound underwater would travel faster, but of course would be muffled by the water. I think you would be more affected by the shock wave, which I would imagine would probably feel like you were kicked in the stomach....

Here is a link to a Glock being fired underwater...

Here is a link to a professional video (about half way down the page) called "Underwater Shooting - Tests and Evaluation" you can buy on the subject, which includes several different brands/models, as well as discusses effectiveness, etc.

I don't know about the seals or British SBS but the Russian Spetnaz had a modified AK for underwater use that firessomething other than a standard bullet. It had a range of about 100ft underwater. I believe thay had some sort of pistol also.

Jerry, you could be right. It is very possible that the director was just using movie magic and might not have any clue as to the real world where there are handguns meant to be fired underwater.

If the barrel is full of water wouldnt the water be considered blockage and cause bulging of the barrel? How about the slide? does it work in slow motion?

How about recoil? after all.... the water has to be displaced while the bullet is traveling down the barrel....right?

OK...what about non plastic framed firearm? Any problems with shooting metal framed handguns under water? i.e. 1911 colt?

HEy!!!!!! just asking!

:D
