View Full Version : Best way to learn...

Best way to learn, I've always found, is not to come off as an expert. Just ask the question. I like wheelguns (early influence by Elmer Kieth) and have hunted with them.
My possible choice for a concealed carry weapon: Five shot, 2" barrel, DA revolver. No frills, no ported barrel, no shrouded hammer. Tauras M85.
Any comments more than just appreciated.
Thanks

Personally, the .38 'snubbie' is a great weapon. I use one for ultra lightweight clothing, usually in the summer,or as a back-up.The only downside is lack of firepower.Have you tried semi-autos? Unless you have paws like Deputy(large hands) you could get some real nice compact semi-autos.Walther P99 compact, and of course the baby Glocks.Which will hold 8 rounds and more. I prefer a HK USP compact, but that's just me. Get what feels good to you,and what you can shoot well. That is the bottom line. And if at all possible," try it before you but it". Either by rental (Firing Line,or other gun shop) or another member. Most of us here have a 'couple' guns and are happy to let you try them,my HK's included. Hope this is some help.

Good choice on the DAO. No need to have that hammer hanging out there to snag on your clothes when you're in a hurry. Why no porting? If it helps you hit the target, it's valuable.
I sometimes carry a .38 Smith Airweight either as primary or backup, depending on how I'm dressed and where I'm going. With the right ammo it can be very effective, and 5 shots is usually enough. I carry Silvertip +P's in the cylinder and 158 gr semiwadcutters in the speedloaders.

If it works for you then it's the right choice. Everyone's different. My only comment is why do you want a hammer sticking out to get snagged on?

My choice for a summer carry or lightweight gun is the S&W 642. It is hammerless so no concerns about snagging and its 5 shot 38Spl +P is more than adequate. I do carry a speedloader but I wonder why. If I have to reload what makes me think that my 6th, 7th - 10th shot is going to be any more effective than 1 through 5?

Thank you. Thank you all very much. I'll rethink the hammer issue. And I do have a place to try before I buy.
Any other comments... you can be sure I'll read and consider them.
One more thing... I do promise you guys I'll never do anything to make us all look bad. I think the entire state is impressed with how things have gone since 'shall issue' became a reality.

Multiple assailants?
Sure, that's always a possibility. But, how many do you plan for? I know what my split, transition and reload times with a revolver are from competition. I've got five shots without a reload. At snub noses ranges I've got two and probably three down. If the fourth hasn't booked by then and he is well armed it won't matter how many reloads I plan for.
