Police Chief Fined for Handgun in Luggage?
(10/22/03 - Detroit) — Police Chief Jerry Oliver is not yet a licensed police officer in Michigan, raising questions about whether he could legally possess the handgun found in his luggage
at the airport. Though Oliver is in the process of becoming a sworn officer, he was not when security officials found a .22-caliber handgun in baggage he checked for a Saturday flight to
Philadelphia.
Oliver, who does not have a concealed weapon permit, says he didn't think he had to register the weapon in Michigan. He has been a sworn officer in other departments and said he has
had the gun "for years." The federal Transportation Security Administration is investigating why Oliver didn't declare the weapon when he checked his baggage. Oliver could face a fine
of up to $1,000.
It sound to me like this guy needs some prison time.
Not a slap on the wrist.

Maybe I'm not very bright on this topic but how could a Police Chief not be a licensed police officer? Don't you have to be a licensed police officer BEFORE you can become the Police Chief?

Nope a cheif does not need to be a sworn officer. If they do any "police" work then they need to be sworn.

Or, if you carry concealed, you must have a CPL (which he does not) or be a sworn officer. How many times do you think he has broken the law by carrying that pea shooter concealed???? or did he carry the .22 openly
(LOL)

When he FIRST came to town, There was a story of him
hitting his last wife. Hit your mate, "NO CPL", It's the law.
Am I wrong on this "RULE"??

We - pro 2a/CCW - are not the only groups bashing his arrogance and stupidity, his own officers are too! Visit http://www.geocities.com/firejerryo/ to see their side.
Note that Oliver violated the First Amendment rights of the Webmaster, now former LEO, by firing him for operating the site on his OWN TIME!
Hey, anybody wanna go to the fundraiser on the 13th? It would be interesting to see a bunch of CPL holders at a Cop party. They throw some of the best, a couple of retirements and the closing of Hec's Bar. Still can't recall much of what happened after 5a.m. at Hec's. :-) :-)
FYI: Hec's was a Cop and mostly white bar at French Rd. and Gratiot (City Airport) that got bought out by White Castle about six years ago. Threw a big closing party and I think almost everyone was carrying, LEO or not. The only bar I have seen where a big black cat, the furry four legged kind, named Midnight checked you out when you came in.

Nice web site, lots of good info, I can't go to the party but I'm sending $10 anyways. It's a good cause. Few things annoy me more than power abuse issues.
Oliver is not a complete waste, he can always be used as a bad example.

If I recall correctly, the gun hadn't been registered.....ummm, I mean safety inspected, either. Good to know he's so aware of what the law is.

Not exactly....
The officer was not forced to take the website down, as your link proves. First Amendment rights can be exercsied freely, but they may cost you your job! Try it with your boss sometime....
