Homeowners, smokers, drinkers and the wealthy would shoulder much of the burden in solving the state's $1.3 billion budget shortfall under Gov. Jennifer Granholm's budget proposal for the 2005 fiscal year.

The proposal, unveiled Thursday, includes earlier county tax collections, higher cigarette and liquor taxes, creation of an estate tax and a $9 increase in fees for copies of marriage licenses, death and birth certificates.

The tax and fee increases would bring in $391 million more for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Moving up county tax collections from December will save the state $150 million. Payments would be due no later than Sept. 15.

Also ending the 65 million in grants to college students.

Dropping payments by $74 to school districts per pupil.

Closing a prison in plymouth.

Gee this is the education party right? Cuts to schools are way back on 61 when they would be top of the fold if it was a republican.

I just paid my friggin taxes I do not need nor can I afford to pay any more damn it. WHY DO I HAVE TO BALANCE MY BUDGET but GOVERMENT JUST SPENDS PENDS SPENDS.

Remember the Boston Tea Party?

How about a Jenny smoke and drink out?

I am not much of a drinker but I do like my cigars.....and I suppose they are going to be taxed more also...although I have not heard of that yet.

When are the taxpayers going to be heard?

The government has gotten fat and soft. They take our money and then give to many who do not deserve the money.

Its time for the government to clean house and cut waste in and of itself and then prune back the frivolous (sp) spending.

Taxing stuff that only part of the population uses is wrong.

The State should only be able to spend what they get in revenue and not be able to increase taxes without a vote of the people and not the senators or house of reps.

As far as I am concerned the only way to tax fairly is to do away with property tax, set a reasonable income tax and make it a set percentage for all, no write-offs or fancy loopholes....and then make the government operate within the resources that come from that kind of budget.

Just my 2cents ...again....

set a reasonable income tax and make it a set percentage for all

I'd prefer a flat sales tax(not on food, keep it on the items it is currently)...and get rid of the income tax.

might slow the economy...likely would make people think twice about buying crap they don't need in the first place
