This article talks about how the feds are going after the Illinois State firearms database, because they are claiming that it violates the law that congress passed in January stating that the government can't keep information about firearms transactions for more than 24 hours after approval. I was wondering if they are successful if we couldn't convince them to get rid of Michigans registration, oh I'm sorry saftey inspection scheme.
One can only dream.

Nope. It's a different set of data.
Illinois is keeping the transaction data from the NICS check. Buyer, gun, and equally importantly, seller. Moreover, it the NICS data they're keeping. And that's data on all firearms transactions.
The Michigan system does use the NICS data. That's what Illinois is using illegally. It's the NICS data that federal law prohibits LEOs from retaining.

Not all transactions, Jim, just the FFL ones. Still no requirement for an NICS check on personal sales.

Ya just never know what could happen. The not very clever euphemism of "safety inspection" that the state has been using for years as the Michigan way of gun registration is now known to the powers that be strongest, the NRA.
I called when I got my latest issue of the magazine and asked why they were looking at Illinois and doing nothing for Michigan. The reply was that they weren't aware and that as far as they knew there was no legislation being talked about in our state. I gave them my name and contact info along with some instances of questionable use of the system by federal authorities and said that I would be willing to work with a legislator on getting this "safety registration" appealed.
