Range must follow noise rules
By Jim Totten
DAILY PRESS & ARGUS
Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Burress has put the state on notice that its shooting range in Green Oak Township must comply with a local noise ordinance.
If the Island Lake State Recreation Area shooting range doesn't keep gun noise under 65 decibels, the sporting clay section of the range could be closed down.

I STILL have yet to see conlusive evidence that the noise ordinance is even being violated! Everything I've read states that the ambient noise from airplanes/highways/etc. is equal to or greater than the noise from the range.

I spoke to Keith Charters last night and he wasn't yet aware of this but was expecting it. He believes their goal is to shut down the range and not just lower the sound levels, especially based on their constant reference to other issues, such as lead concerns.
There isn't much anyone can do right now but sit and wait, but it definately won't hurt to write to the Argus and other area papers and try to sway public opinion a little. The fact is that its a small group of whack-jobs and not the entire township, as they'd like you to believe.
Those folks are not nice people, though. Lillian Hopkins threatened to sue me for speaking at a NRC meeting and Alan Sietz was sending me pretty regular emails calling me an ignorant redneck.

Are you referring to Judge Burress?
If so, he's termed out because of age. Del Vero is stepping down too so there's two open judge races.

sounds like it's time to organize a shoot at the range. 200 people...200 rounds apiece....

Would rather hear gunfire at a range than loud car stereos, neighbors, and football games by my home. Funny how those who live by railroads seem to "Get used to it and tune it out" but those who live by a gun range can't do the same. Horns and crossing gate bells seem to be louder.

I've lived next to a train track nearly my whole life. Literally less than 100 yard from my bed room at my parents house and I can only remember a few time I have woken up to the horn. Thunder and Lightning rarely but a door creaking and I am up. I guess I am use to certain noises.
