Michigan: Parking Lot Legislation Headed to the House Floor!

On Tuesday, October 27 the House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee approved House Bill 5302 and House Bill 5303 by a 9 to 1 vote.

HB5302, introduced by State Representative Paul Opsommer (R-93), and HB5303, introduced by State Representative Joel Sheltrown (D-103), would prohibit employers from firing employees who safely and lawfully store their firearms in locked vehicles while at work. The bill now moves to the full Michigan House of Representatives where a vote may be taken any day.

There's the employer's out, right there...

Employer: I fired him because his gun was in the glove box and the glove box does not have a lock on it.

Employer: I fired him because his gun was under the driver's seat in a holster

Employer: I fired him because his gun was in the seat pocket behind the driver's seat.

Employer: I fired him because his gun was in the trunk, not locked up.

Take a look at the actual language of the proposed change...I don't think any of this applies:

Me included, the auto companies all prohibit any guns on company property which includes parking lots. I would keep it in a locked box in my locked car.

I hope not, because it seems like if you give employer's any little excuse (like walking funny) they'll fire you... :) Just ask the guy who worked at Home Depot and wore a pin that had the word God on it... :)

So, in the case for Chrysler, not only do you have to own a Chrysler to park in the lots, you have to own a specific brand of gun too.. lol :)

Well, perhaps at CTC you need a Chrysler to park in the management lots, not the case at Sterling Heights at all. Management lot is filled with Ford, GMs, Toyotas, Hondas, etc. We no longer enforce this.

Why?

Because at the main data center at Sterling Heights, 90% of the workers there are contract workers, there are no Chrysler people. Might be 150 IT workers there and about 10 are Chrysler employees, rest are contract and we cannot tell them what car to drive.

The Chrysler direction is to be almost 100% contract for IT people, Chrysler employees are only management, no one who actually knows anything technical. All IT is outsourced.

(You think we can afford people to enforce policy in the parking lot? Really, no way. No money for it.)

How would this stop an employer from firing someone for bringing a gun onto the property, even if 'legally' in the vehicle?

They can fire you for ANYTHING...so I just don't really see the point to all this. They may not say it was because of your gun to your face or on any documentation, but if they find out and don't want you working there any longer because of it, yuo're gone.

A salary worker like me, yes, I could be fired for many things. UAW worker, not so easy.
