Conservation Coalition meets with Lt. Governor John Cherry

Conservation Coalition meets with Lt. Governor John Cherry
Friday, October 2, 2009
MUCC Conservation Insider

Following Sportsmen's Day, MUCC and members of the Michigan Conservation Coalition had the opportunity to meet again with Lt. Governor Cherry to share their thoughts on the recombination of state departments (see DNR and DEQ budgets combined; next step for new department still foggy). The Coalition offered the following recommendations for his consideration:
  • Wildlife, Forestry, Fisheries, Water Management, Outdoor Recreation, and Environmental Quality should be part of a single, cohesive governing unit.
  • Resource management functions in all existing agencies should be considered in the process of reorganizing state government in order to ensure that the future of resource management in Michigan is efficient and effective
  • The Natural Resources Commission or a similar citizen governing body must remain the sole state authority on fish and game management decisions.
  • Long-term funding must be incorporated into the future of resource management.
  • Simply combining the departments will not lead to effective solutions - we must change the way we manage our natural resources to a service-based philosophy for the people of Michigan.
  • The sporting and conservation community should continue to serve an important role in the reorganization of the governing entities that manage Michigan's natural resources.
MUCC and the Conservation Coalition will continue to work with Lt. Governor Cherry and legislators on various proposals and forthcoming initiatives to recombine Michigan's resource-managing departments.

Thank you to the following Coalition members who contributed to developing recommendations and attended our meeting with Lt. Governor John Cherry:
  • Delta Waterfowl
  • Great Lakes Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers
  • Michigan Association of Conservation Districts
  • Michigan Bear Hunters Association
  • Michigan Charter Boat Association
  • Michigan Conservation Foundation
  • Michigan Ducks Unlimited
  • Michigan Federation of Fly Fishers
  • Michigan Gun Owners
  • Michigan Hunting Dog Federation
  • Michigan Pheasants Forever
  • Michigan Resource Stewards
  • Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fishing Association
  • Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association
  • Michigan Trout Unlimited
  • Michigan United Conservation Clubs
  • Michigan Wild Turkey Hunters Association
  • MSU Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation, and Resource Studies
  • National Wild Turkey Federation (Michigan Chapter
  • National Wildlife Federation
  • Quality Deer Management Association, Michigan State Branch
  • Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
  • Upper Peninsula Sportsmen's Alliance
The Michigan Conservation Coalition is a collection of statewide sportsmen and conservation organizations, which have agreed to work together on cross-cutting issues such as long-term funding for natural resources, protecting our outdoor heritage, and habitat and access.

We have partnered with them for years on issues pertaining to firearm rights and even stretching into our hunting rights.
