I am thinking of getting a .308 rifle in AR or M1A configuration (step up from my mini-30.) Springfield's new 'SOCOM' variant seems like a nice package, but I have never owned an M1A rifle and am not familiar with the pros/cons vs. an AR style. I do like the option with the AR of mounting a scope/dot on top of the carry handle and still having iron sights.

Can anyone offer insight into the comparisons? Has anyone had the chance to try Bushmaster's .308 product yet?

Any advice is appreciated.

Man... that's a tough call. I'd have to go with the M1A just because of personal preference.

I can think of pros and cons for both rifles but nothing that really stands out in my mind. The AR-variant is probably more versatile (as far as accessories and add-ons) but the M-14 variant is a time-tested and robust design.

Do a search or pose the question at BattleRifles.com and Culvers Shooting Page.
I've been seeing negative reports on the current offerings from Springfield.

That include the SOCOM, too Kurt?

Haven't looked for info on that particular model, but in general, there are many complaints.
It is well know that Springfield service is not what it could be.

That should definitely affect one's opinion.

It's too bad. I really like the M1A.

FYI, the AR series is much more scope-friendly than the M14 series.

Skip both of those and get a DSArms FAL in 308.

Anybody have any experience with the CETME .308 Sporter? Dunhams has 'em on sale for $350.00 right now and I've been real itchy for a new rifle lately. :fal: Also been thinking about a Armalite AR-10. Decisions decisions???

The CETMEs are hit and miss. Some work, some don't.

A HK-91 clone from Ohio rapid fire is an exellent choice too. Right around a grand, last I checked.

Jeff : here's another idea . How about a Russian Super Vepr in .308. They won't loose value --less expensive than most and superb craftmanship. Very accurate but quite heavy with the heavy barrel that it sports. Check it out at http://www.robarm.com

I second the FAL. Great gun, lots of different looks too and really cheap mag prices!! :)

speaking of Mag Prices, do you think the price of m1a mags will come down the Sunset of the AWB
