I'm interested in going (and trying to get my daughter & wife to go).

Question:
For small caliber (.22 LR) rifles, I only have a bolt action marlin (only one clip), an old tube feed semi auto and a break open single shot. Is it feasble to shoot the course of fire with any of those?

Quaamik- I didnt have a semi auto for my wife and we decided on a marlin 795. It does go on sale at Dunhams sporting goods randomly for $120 and than you can get a $25 mail in rebate. It is very light and extreamly reliable. It already has sling studs so all you need is a sling, another mag or 2, and some ammo and your good to go.

Dicks has the marlin 795 for $100 after rebate this week, and Dunhams has it with a 4x15 scope for $105 after rebate.

The tube fed would be the best choice. The Marlin would work if you got another magazine for it. Generally, single shots are used by our youngest shooters. (See this article about a FOUR year old at an Appleseed. http://wvgazette.com/News/201009040509 )There are stages where you have to do a mag change. Some of the instructors have 'loaner' rifles available. They are 'usually' Ruger 10/22s. If / when you sign up for an Appleseed send an email to BeeFree (her email is listed on the information pages) and ask about using a loaner. Generally, if we know in advance we can make arrangements to have something more suited to the course of fire available for you to use.

A new rifle (new or used) is not likely in the cards before the October shoots.

How would the tube feed work in the mandatory mag changes? It's quite slow to load, and as it loades from the muzzle end that is definately not something I would allow a beginner (my wife an daughter both qualify in that respect) to perform under stress / time.

What we do is have you load one more round than the course of fire requires. When you get to where the mag change 'should' be you eject one round and continue firing. That 'simulates' the mag change and keeps an even playing field. If you are bring a tube fed and can get your hands on one of those way cool speed loaders for it...by all means get one. This is what I'm talking about.

My brother shot several Appleseeds with a tube-feed semi-auto.

It's different, but possible. If you have a long, super-wide straw (for dumping 10 rds into the tube really quickly), things get pretty easy.

Unfortunately, the shooting line at Lapeer is only big enough for 14-15 shooters, so it sold out fast.
