I got this gun from my father-in-law (now passed)
it was keep in his garage rafters under the insulation???????
it is good working condition, shows some abuse on the wood and blueing
it seems to be missing a detachable scope.
can anybody help with value and possibly getting it restored?
i have not cleaned it for fear of messing something up
i cant even find the caliber markings
it is a very fancy gun with lots of very nice engraving.
thanks
jeff

IIRC, the caliber/choke markings will be on the bottom of the barrels. Since any older drilling is going to be a collectors piece, I'd be loath to have it "restored". The scope bases are what are known as claw mounts. Rings aren't common, but can be found. For a price guide, search "drilling" on Gunbroker and see what closely matches what you have.

Value on these depends heavily on the rifle barrel's caliber.... do not restore or you will trash the value. These never caught on over here, much more popular overseas. Oodles were brought home by GI's in WWII. I think they rock, and have bought a few over the years paying $400-$1200 for regular to really fancy. The had one over at the gunshop in saginaw but it sat there for years with its $1400 tag.... i think its still there! Yours looks to be more utilitarian in nature with a little decoration (fancy for these would include horn trigger guards, heavy engraving, and carved stocks). Find out what the calibers are on the barrels to start after you oil it down to clean and halt age attacking it. If the calibers are not noted under the barrels you may have to do a chamber cast to find out what they are.

You might ask about the rifle here http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/forums/34/1/Ask_The_Gunwriters
There are a couple of gun writers there that have interest in old drillings and double rifles. They should be able to help with getting a price and how far to go with cleaning it up.

Yes, DO NOT RESTORE!!!!! Many collectible firearms have had their value completely wiped out by so-called restorers. Don't do it and don't believe the word of a restorer or one that claims he can bring up the value of a firearm.

Removal of the patina, nicks, scratches, surface imperfections caused by age, or other marks is what will destroy the value.

If you want to make it a functioning field piece, then restore it. Otherwise, just leave it alone.

it would be such a beautiful gun, it sucks seeing it in that condition.
but i will not mess with it.
i found this and it is almost identical to mine except for the scope mount
but thats about the only difference i see and that one is in better shape

The one in the link has been "messed with"- refinished and recoil pad added. A collector would cry! Do take care of yours by wiping it down with CLP or other preservative and maybe a couple coats of paste wax on the stock.
