I'm looking at the h&r single shot rifled barrel with a scope and am looking for other options for an accurate slug gun. I own an 870 w/ vent rib barrel only and an 887 nitromag(for sale) with shot barrel only. Can a cantailiever barrel scoped for an 870 be as accurate as a scoped rifled barrel h&r ? thanks for any advice !!

Mossberg 500. If you want a field barrel too, Dunhams has the combo pack with a rifled slug cantilever barrel with a scope already on it. Also comes with a 28" field barrel. $299. Can't beat the deal

IMHO, the HR slugster, 12 guage, is one of, if not THE most accurate slug guns..

Sort of like the inherent accuracy of a bolt gun out does most other platforms.. this single shot WILL outperform most other pumps, etc.

the question is.... do you NEED that level of performance for 50-80 yards shot? probably not...

I own two 500's and an H&R. I think the H&R is a great slug gun, but you should opt for the bull barrel model. Unfortunately, that model is wayy front heavy and is uncomfortable for me to carry on long walks compared to the 500's. I recently picked up a model 500 slug gun in 20 gauge and am going to use it this year and see how it goes.

The H&R is the way to go.
Get the 12 guage, the new sabot loads are incredibly accurate.

I would look into a bolt slug gun, or go with the H&R

two round capacity :headinj:

So what the H&R is one round capacity. There deer not Zombies, its called deer hunting not deer shooting.

two round capacity :headinj:

How many you need? Better make the first one count and not depend on the deer standing still to get shot at some more!! LOL

i believe they call it "capacity overcompensation" this is the feeling that you need more than one round to harvest a deer. I mean we are not hunting dangerous game here, or when deer start arming themself:fa:

Exactly.

And, how many times do most hunters ever shoot two deer, bang/bang unless they are meat hunting?

Whatever happened to the "one shot, one kill" mentality of hunters?

Besides, with a little manual dexterity and practice, a reload on a single shot can occur mighty rapidly.

3 rounds for deer hunting is good, think of it as waterfoul hunting for deer

i havent shot a bolt action shotgun before, but i have a 500, got it w the 28 in field barrel and a 24 in(i think) fully rifled barrel w cantilever scope mount. ill b honest, i love it. as far as accuracy, in a long shot, i dont really know, but there is virtually no trigger pull on it (not sure if that normal to all slug guns). that sabot goes right where you are aiming. ill be hunting with it this year for the first time. figured id leave the old m1 carbine at home this year

I'll chime in and say get a 20 gauge instead of the 12. Less kick, better trajectory, and cheaper rounds...so whats not to like!? If you need cheap, go with a break action like an H&R, if you need slightly better accuracy, go with a bolt from Savage. But definitely look at a 20 gauge...it's PLENTY for deer.

I agree completely, the ballistics of the 20 is very impressive. Savage or H&R would be the way to go.

It will weigh less also (a big deal if you get a H&R ultra slug)

I have a Mossburg 500 with the cantilever barrel and it performs very well. I have a 1.5-3 bushnell banner scope on it (thats the only one i could find to hold up to the shot gun blast) and I can consistantly get 3" groups at 150 yards. I could probably do better but for deer what does it really matter if you are within 3"?
