SPRING LAKE -- Spring Lake District Library will be hosting a free presentation about William Wales Scagel, a legendary bladesmith known for his custom knives. Scagel expert Dr. James Lucie will talk about the man, his life, and his knives on Tuesday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Lucie is a bladesmith in his own right who specializes in creating knives in the Scagel style and is a collector of Scagel knives and memorabilia.

Dr. Lucie will also have copies of his recently published book about Scagel entitled Scagel Handmade available for purchase and signing. Over thirty years in the making, the book includes information about Scagel's personal life and over 100 photos of Scagel knives and other hand-crafted items.


William Scagel lived in Fruitport from to 1936 to 1963. The Scagel name is as well known to knife enthusiasts as Tiffany is to the world of jewelry. Scagel knives are admired for their one of a kind style and extraordinary craftsmanship. Scagel was inducted into the American Bladesmith Hall of Fame in 1996.
