I'm going out west this fall (late Oct. in MT) and I have the followings guns to chose from to take with me. I can't take em all, only one.

Browning BAR in 300 WM
Browning BAR in .308
Winchester Mod. 70 in 30-06

All have scopes on em. The BAR's are semi autos and the Win is a bolt gun. All are very accurate. I might be shooting a Mule deer if I tag out on an elk. I can also shoots P. dogs if the time permits.

They all are good rounds for the large game. distance and trajectory is what you want to look for. flatter shooting at longer distances.

just about any of them will vaporize a prairee pup though.

I went hunting in MT this past fall......some of those shots can really be long range. I would say use the .30-06 or the .300 WM, and base your choice on the gun that is the most accurate. While the .308 will take elk, I don't think it would be a good choice for long range shooting if the need arose. I shot 3 critters out there this past fall, and the ranges were 215 yards, 250 yards, and 300 yards.....all were checked with laser range finders. Find the longest range here in MI that you can and practice, practice, practice!!!! Good luck :D

At the Midland Gun Club, we have a 600 yard range. Most of the guys shooting there are using .308's. Check a balistic tables and zero at 300 yards. It will show you the trajectory of all 3 calibers on a sight line. Also, check the ft lbs at different ranges to make your determination. The 300 mag is an excellent choice for Deer and Elk, but may prove expensive for nocking down a couple hundred doggies.
