Dear Friend in Conservation,

As you may have already heard, last week State Senate Majority Leader-elect Randy Richardville and MUCC announced legislation (the "Hunter Heritage" bill - Senate Bill 1589) that aims to better instill hunting safety and ethics in Michigan's youth, remedy Michigan's last-in-the-nation hunter recruitment rate and preserve Michigan's hunting heritage. MUCC has been working with Sen. Richardville on this legislation since the MUCC membership passed a resolution (introduced by Rob Miller) this year to remove the state's minimum hunting age in order to promote hunter recruitment and safety in Michigan.

Since the bill's announcement last week, the idea has been a big topic of discussion in the news media - mostly positive, which should be expected in a bill that promotes hunting safety and would reverse the trend in Michigan's dismal hunter recruitment rate. However, some people who are not as familiar with hunting are already negatively attacking the bill without the facts. That's where you come in. MUCC is challenging members and those who believe in the "Hunter Heritage" bill to write letters to the editor of local newspapers in order to set the facts straight. To help, we've drafted some sample letters complete with facts and information gathered in our research about hunter recruitment and youth hunting safety.

Goal: Letter to the editor or guest editorial printed in every daily paper in the state discussing the facts about the "Hunter Heritage" legislation.

Some things to remember when writing/sending your letter:

Remember to check your paper's requirements for submitting letters.
Letters may often be submitted online, which is an easier and more efficient way to submit one. Most papers also have word limits.
The sample linked above is 170 words, which is around average for most newspapers, which have limits of 150-250 words.
Tell your own story! MUCC provided a sample to get you started, along with facts about the issue, but your letter will be more effective with a personal twist
If you're an MUCC member, remember to indicate so under your signature!
If your letter is printed, let us know! Send electronic links to dnyberg@mucc.org or hard copies to MUCC, 2101 Wood Street, Lansing, MI 48912If you have a good relationship with your local newspaper or would simply like to say a little more about the issue, you may want to consider contacting your paper's editor to ask them about submitting a "guest editorial" or "viewpoint" on the issue. Often papers are seeking to have guest opinions write about hot-topics and will allow them to be longer and more in-depth than a typical "letter to the editor." MUCC has prepared an example guest editorial as well - but you should be encouraged to use the facts in that sample to tell your own story about why the Hunter Heritage bill is good for Michigan!
