This is my fist post, but I have been reading posts for the past two months. I am taking my class tomorrow (Saturday) to get my CPL, so I am excited! I don't own any guns, nor did we have any in the house growing up, but I am at that point where I am ready to start shooting with my wife and kids.

I have several friends that have many pistols so I have recently shot a Glock 9mm, .40, and .45, Sig 9mm, Ruger LCP, and another .380. I went to the gun show last week and saw and held around a dozen or so pistols. The .45 was too much for me (I think), the .40 was doable, but the 9mm was just about perfect for my level.

I know that many (I know, not all) people love the Glocks because they eat any ammo. When using the Glocks, my knuckle on my middle finger was raw from the trigger guard corner rubbing on it. I found out that it happens to many people, but I also read it was possibly because I wasn't holding it properly.

I don't know what model of Sig I was using, but it was comfortable. I held a Springfield XDM at the show and it felt good in my hand. I think that I am more comfortable where the grip (if that is the correct terminology is correct) is rounded under the trigger guard.

I think that I want to get a Ruger LCP to carry and a 9mm to use at the range, do to the fact that I don't know if my wife can handle a .40 as a new shooter and I want her to enjoy going to the range with me.

I also read that some people suggest getting a heavy metal gun as the first gun and not a polymer. I would like to get one that I would use more than just a beginner shooter, even if I have to spend a bit more money so I don't have to sell and buy another one.

So, I am looking for some suggestions based upon my experiences and possibly looking to pick up a 9mm locally around Livingston County or close to it with low usage at a great price. I can get a PP as I have one right now.

Welcome to MGO.

There are going to be a LOT of different opinions on what you should buy. May I suggest investing in a .22 pistol for cheap practice?

A .22 was a thought as well. I have heard how cheap ammo is. Maybe that is something that I should do before getting a 9mm.

I assumed there were a lot of options, I just didn't like how my finger felt after shooting the Glocks. I have read too many times that I need to shoot the gun so I know if it is comfortable, so that is what I am attempting to do.

Don't put too much value on round count. Most firearms manufactured in the last 100 years have already out lived their original owners.
In all probability, anything you buy will out live you.

for your wife and kids i would recomend a .22 to break them in and they can fire alot of rounds cheaply until shooting stance and grip become automatic

also for the young ones and ladys, nothing takes the fun out of them shooting more than a gun thats uncofortable for them to shoot noise wise.
ear protection is a must even if there just watching

:welcome: to MGO. The .22 is a great idea for starters and will work well with beginners.

Congrats on taking your CPL class...
As for shooting at the range...
.22 would be a "CHEAP" shooter...

Now if you looking for a good handgun, stop up to Top gun and fondle a few and rent all that you are looking to possible buy...
As for XDm is a good choice.. Also you might want to try out M&P 9mm, and Smith new SD handgun too..

good luck on your hunt...

Me personally I am a Glock guy I love everything about them. But if it is a comfort issue I would take a long look at a Smith and Wesson M&P. By far the best feeling pistol out of the box IMO. For the Wife and kids a .22 is great cheap fun that will teach the fundamentals without breaking the bank or wrist. For carrying I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable with anything less than a 9mm. A lot of things come into play in a SD shooting. You lose most of your basic motor skills and things happen so fast that you most likely wont have time to aim, so you want enough power to knock him back, so he cant squeeze any rounds off. I recommend you spend ALOT of time with your carry piece. Learn how it shoots. Put yourself in a SD situation at the range I.E. Pistol in holster Safety on(If it has one) , and repeatedly draw and fire to build your muscle memory. Good luck and welcome to mgo!!!
