What= Troy ambidextrous mag release. @$60

Why=Multiple reasons in my case...

#1) Because myself like a lot of left handers, did not want to be limited by buying a "left handed" model of rifle. IMO, you are selling yourself short on being able to buy the best stuff like BCGs, and you're selling yourself short on the re-sale down the road if you choose to sell.

#2) Because i was finding it difficult to have to use my right hand to hit the mag release button and grab a spare mag. It just felt really inefficient to have to reach up with my right hand, hit the mag release, then reach back and grab a mag, then insert the mag.

It also conflicted with the way i prefer to change the mags on my pistols. Hit the mag release with my left hand(index finger), while grabbing and inserting a mag with my right.

Now, i'm sure with enough training and practice i could get smoother and faster with the standard mag release, but felt it just wasn't for me.

Now i'm able to use my index finger on my left hand to hit the mag release(like i use the bolt release), while grabbing a mag from my right side. It also allows the mag release to be used in the standard manner (right side of lower) if you need to for some reason.

This product, like most Troy gear, is very well made and feels very durable. But it will take more time to determine if it is truly capable of holding up to wear and tear. I'm confident it will.

After doing a couple dozen mag changes, it definitely feel more natural to me.

For anyone considering this part, it's also very very simple to install. Another bonus in my book.

As to 'Cons', i haven't found one yet other then paying for it.

Here are a couple pictures. The first is from Troys site, the second is the actual part on my rifle.

A bit pricey but being a SouthPaw myself I can see the advantage. I'll add that to my to do list before the Warden tightens the leash.

I was thinking about adding a Mag well grip like the one pictured.

Pricey is relative. When you start adding up the money i've sunk into this thing, $60 is the least of my worries. Hell, your sushi posts end up costing me more then that. :)

I know nothing about that grip.

1) The magwell is already perfectly fine to grab onto

2) You should only hold the magwell if, for whatever reason, you are unable to grab the actual handguard.

The issue with holding onto the handguard is that you don't get nearly as much control of the rifle as when holding your hand further out. Also the rifle tends to cant side to side when moving left to right, much like when using a beer can grip on a VFG. You'll find with a magwell grip that the rifle will be considerably more difficult to get on target and keep on target then a forward grip.

Gonna have to change my rig to rails to do that! An even better excuse to add it to the list before she figures it out! :scholar:
Than you Joe.

No need for a quad rail...although this is why I prefer at least mid length handguards. Allows for more purchase out front.

Thanks for the AAR Hope. Maybe on one of future builds I'll check one of those out. I went with the left handed Stag for my first AR, which is what I'm currently running.

Mag release looks difficult to use...like there isn't enough leverage. how hard is it to press?

I'd probably go for one of these myself, swapping the oversized button for a standard one: http://www.operationparts.com/Knight_s_Armament_Ambidextrous_Magazine_Release_p/20470-1.htm

It's pretty easy to push. Of course that is in the comfort of my home, so i'll see if i still feel the same after i use it in the single digit temperatures. Never saw the Knights one before.

it is as easy for most lefty's to use a right handed gun as effective and often better for them to do weapons checks and malfunction clearances than a lefty gun to be honest the lefty gun was a stupid idea
and nitch for the market

I ended up installing an ambi-catch on my AR

http://www.norgon.com/

It was an easy process and has worked well so far.

I thought about the lefty rifle for a minute. Serving as an Infantryman, I guess I just got used to it. The biggest plus for me as a civvy now was the ambi safety. I'm still learning not to use my index finger.
