I am looking for a budget fast access safe storage box for a carry gun and home defense gun storage. I need it to be reasonably quick to access and prefer in the dark or low light so something that can open by feel and/or has a lighted pad would be best. I have a large very secure safe for my guns and valuables so this is just to keep my kids out of it and still have it easily accessed by me. I am not really worried about theft of the box, because most of the time when I am gone I plan to have the gun on me, and if I don’t I will just put it in the main safe.
I have looked over some of the posts on this type thing. I see a couple things I think I could use, but most times I can’t tell if they are lighted buttons or not.

It can be had for just over $100, is easy to open in the dark (all by feel), has an interior light, and programmable for your own code. Backup key comes with it.

They also have single storage units as well.

How long have you had yours?

I have always liked the idea of them, but never looked into them very much. I found good deals on them at Amazon, but was a little concerned about the many bad reviews with short battery life and many that quick working after the one year warrantee runs out. If the thing would work 5 years it would be ok I guess for the price, but many give out in less than two or three years. Of course a lot more people who have problems will complain on reviews where those who are happy often don't bother.

+1 on the Gun Vault, this is exactly what you are looking for, use mine for the same resaons you will be. I can open it in the pitch dark all by feel, and it is big enough for a couple of guns and magazines, you won't be disappointed.

So far the batteries haven't run out, but it has electric back up if they do.

FYI,

A month or 2 ago, I saw the Gun Vaults at Harbor Frieght for $99.00. Get a 20% Off coupon and it'll be $80.00.

They were the actual Gun Vaullts not their Bunker Hill Brand.

For under $100 I may try one and take a chance it will last a couple years. Just too many bad reviews. It they stop working you throw them away.

Now I have read a pile of good stuff about the Barska Biometric safe, but it is more like $200.

I've "fixed" a few of these, the only problem I have run across is that when the owner goes to replace the batteries, they end up disconnecting the ribbon cable that goes to the key pad. You may only slightly dislodge it and a little bump could make it non-functional. So as long as you are careful when replacing the batteries, it should be great. I also suggest replacing the batteries every 6 months just to be safe. Also buy good, expensive batteries. $6 vs $3 could be the difference of you being safe, or you getting a bullet in your ass.

In other words, don't buy "budget" batteries for your "budget" safe...

Battery life is a big issue with that one for sure based on the reviews. I wonder now if the great difficulty people have with changing them leads to damage of the unit.

I have been doing more checking. I found this one at Harbor Freight. It has very possitive reviews, and I like the look of those door bolts.

I have this one.

It beeps crazy loud and it looks like there is no way to disable it. There is no chance you are going to get your gun without tht BG knowing you are getting in your safe. I'll just use it to keep my extra guns away from the kids. It will obviousley be harder to hide due to it's size and the button configuration will be harder to open in the dark.

I'm looking at one of these gunvaults as well. I have my eye on the GV1000-DLX model. The big draw for me on the deluxe model it comes with a power cord so you can plug it into the wall.

I ordered this one. Easy to transport into the car for travel.

I have had this unit for about three years now and use it every day. It sits on the floor beneath my bed. I highly recommend this unit as I have yet to replace the battery. It can be opened in the dark and also comes with a back-up key.

(sorry about the chinzy cell phone pics.)
So far, easy to program, easy to use. I love it!!! I spent too much for it as it is now on sale at amazon for about 80 bucks...

Like anything else, most comments you hear are from mal-contents that have something to vent. I think this is a perfect size for beside the bed as well as to use in the car when I want to lock it up and enter a gun free zone. Seems sturdy enough for me, and I was worried from the reviews that the buttons were flaky, but they work just fine.

I have a 7 year old daughter to keep fingers off....
