Was looking to get a few thousand rounds for this year's training/classes. After online searches I decided to give one of MGO's advertisers a try. Great Lakes Ammo (GLA) was located in Rochester Hills which made it convenient for me to go and pick up and save $ on shipping. I wanted to test the ammo before committing to purchase a few thousand. I contacted Stan @ Great Lakes and they were in the finishing stages of moving from their Rochester Hills facility to Wixom. He agreed to meet up with me for a couple boxes of ammo while they were still in Rochester Hills.

I got a chance to finally test the rounds yesterday, granted this is not a scientific test since I do not have chrono's etc. I started off by cleaning 2 M&P's a Full Size and a Compact the night before. The plan was to shoot 90 rounds of S&B factory 115gr ammo through the full size and 90 rounds of GLA Remanufactured 115gr ammo the compact. I also alternated 10 rounds of S&B and GLA to see if there is any difference in felt recoil on each gun.

Observation:
All 100 rounds from GLA went off without an issue, there was a very slight difference in felt recoil with the GLA feeling a little more powerful than the S&B. GLA also had a little more flash from the barrel compared to the S&B.

After an hour at the range i went home, took both guns apart to see if one was dirtier than the other. Again, there was very little difference between the GLA and the S&B ammo.

Conclusion:
GLA is on the list for me for all future bulk ammo purchases. 1K of 115gr Remanufactured ammo is currently on sale for $180 from their regular $210. They are in the Metro Detroit area so picking up at their new location in Wixom or one of the Gun Shows they attend might be an option. You can save money on the shipping that way. Since they are a Michigan company also expect to pay sales tax.

I spoke to a rep for GLA about a week ago, and he was very interested in helping out any way he could, meeting half-way, and other options for buying. I will be looking them up in the future.
Great report of the ammo Mike, this is the info that shooters need to hear.

I purchased some of their remanufactured 45 ACP, standard pressure at the Rock Financial Showplace last February and roughly 5 rounds per 50 round box had severe bullet set-back. Be sure to give your ammo a quick once over.

Great Lakes
$180 for 1000 rounds = $9 a box plus shipping and Tax

Walmart
Federal = $10.50 per 50
Tula = $9.50 per 50

I understand the value of a BULK purchase!!!
But for everyday shooting Walmart is a better deal.

Not if you live close to GLA, simple math.

The point of the OP was he doesn't have to pay shipping and was passing THAT information on for those who might be interested in saving money, even if you shop at Wallyworld.

As for Tula, :barf:, I don't care how much it costs. And by the way, GLA is still cheaper than Tula bile and you're supporting a Michigan company. I realize for some, sadly, that means nothing.

Do they offer .380 auto? I wonder how much for 500/1000 rds.

Thanks for the report.
My name is Mike and I rep for this company. As stated we are in the process of moving but as soon as we can we will set up a MGO group buy and gurantee our prices will be MORE than competitive. We want to make sure we can fill ALL the orders in a timely manner. So we don't have the problems that ocurred with another ammo group buy. Please stay tuned, meanwhile
we will have some ammo available but not enough for a group buy til we get all moved and set up.
Mike
we will list it under dealers as we are FFL Licensed and Insured.

Personally I don't care if ammo is re-manufactured, reloaded, or factory...

So long as it goes BANG at a reasonable price. I've been forutnate I guess, I've only had 1 squib ( a S&B factory round) and 2 duds ( WWB) in my short time of shooting... maybe 3500 rounds in 3 years. I'm a noob

Did someone say "MGO Group Buy" :)

I just hung up with Natchez mid-order when I read this. Hope it happens soon....

I know this thread is a couple months old, but at least you cannot blame me for not searching :D

Just wanted to say that I am very pleased with the Ammo I bought from the MGO September Group Buy. I put 200 rds of 9mm thru my XD Tactical, and 200 rds of .40 thru my EMP and not a single issue. I could not tell any difference between Great Lakes Ammo and the usual WWB/UMC I usually bought for range time. Shot very well. I will def jump in on future group buys from Great Lakes Ammo. Great deal!

A+++++

Sorry to bring up an old thread - but I just wanted to toss my two cents in here... TULA is dirty, nasty stuff. If it works for you, great - but I've never had anything but problems with it.

What I'm getting at is this - comparing GLA to TULA is just not quite right.

Walmart sells plenty of made in USA stuff. federal ammo being one of them.
I bought my kid some wooden blocks from the clearance rack. so he could make his own angry birds setup. surprisingly the blocks where made in USA too.

I just want to say I love GLA ammo. I am willing to pay a little extra for it instead of buying from walmart. Never had any problems with it and intend to get more soon.

+1 for GLA. Shot plenty of the .45 stuff with zero problems. I also feel good about supporting a local company vs. corporate slobs.

I see their finally going to be opening up their shop in Wixom on March 1st.

I wonder if their going to have normal 9 to 5 business hours and will the ammo stay reasonably priced?

I'm currently about halfway through 1000 rounds of .40S&W GLA and I've had zero issues. Definitely the most affordable I've found around. I'd be very interested in another GLA MGO group buy if it comes up.

bought 1000 rounds of .40 from their very first group buy here. Guy was willing to meet with me practically whenever for my pickup because I missed their group pickup date.

awesome service and the ammo does what its intended to do. I shoot it, and I dont have to think about it. Thats about all I want from my ammo, that and its local.

Local company, working with MGO for nice buys. Rather work with a local guy trying to make it then Wally world. I'll pay more for it rather then having to use that Tula crap!!!

Good luck with the new shop GLA, You will get more of my business.
