Yeah....I like to stand 15-25yrds away, unless it has a forward tilt to it deflecting the shards into the ground.

I would stand that far away even WITH the tilt.

stay at least 10 yards away...

its been a few years since i last participated but that was the minimum distance mandated by the USPSA...

it really isnt as dangerous as you might think...

that steel plate is a liability the major dents and pocked marks in the steel will clause serious deflections and issues steel has certain ratings AR500HV rated steel is the only way to go... with certain thickness as well i have a nice hunk of 5.56 jacket lodged against my cheekbone under my eye socket from some homemade steel like that it was caused by a deflection off the pitted steel

My current crop of targets have a 25 degree angle to them are 3/4 inch thick
AR500HV rated

issue with some rifle rounds is the velocity doing the damage Im no metals expert but i have used enough of it and done enough with several companies now and you can tell and know the difference

Quite a few years ago, a shooting buddy put together a "shooting tree",with a steel truck rim as a base. The center of the rim had a sectional center post
(came apart for transport) then several "arms" off the center post. One arm was spring loaded, with a steel plate @ the end. Other side had a fixed arm
with a "paddle wheel", which would spin when one of the paddles with hit.
This was the first of several steel targets we made..We = me coming up with ideas for different targets, him actually making the targets work.
Went as far as making a smaller (more portable) base with horizonlat shaft, from which 4-5 small steel plates were suspended. Hit the plates & they would spin up ,until all plates were in an up position, then hit a "reset" lever & the plates would drop down again. We were ready to mass produce these, until I spoke with a successful businessman about a buisness/marketing plan. His advice was that liability insurance would be impractical as people who choose to ignore the manufacturers instructions, would still sue (us) when injuies resulted from their stupidity.. Had a lot of fun shooting @ our "prototypes", and we learded a lot. Most importantly was the type of steel used for target surfaces. Soft steel would dent easily & high speed rifle rounds (.223) would punch through it. Hard (brittle) steels would fragment when hit with high speed rounds, which was dangerous. As my friend was a Dumpster-diving scrap metal collector and self-styled fabricator/welder, our
material & production costs were low.. Definately remember this as "Good Times".. Joepistol..:pistols:

The plate is 500 brinell, 1/2" plate. The heim joint allows the hit to deflect down or to the sides.
It fit a standard target base, assembles and takes down without tools (depending on frame hits), and stores flat for transport.

I'll fill the rifle hits when I paint it.
