I'm a semi auto pistol girl with little experience with anything else.

Can you guys (and gals) point me in a good direction to point HIM to getting his first AR?

What are you two looking for in an AR? Cost? Range? Hunting? HD?

First, get a .22 AR like an M&P15 22 if you want cheap. $400-ish for the rifle and 5000 rounds of ammo for about the price of a half case of .223...

Or, get this lower:

And this upper:

Go any cheaper and I suspect the parts will be made from clay and assorted plants...

Or get a kit like this if you want to build it (only need lower receiver):

Or you can get the AR and a CMMG conversion kit to fire .22lr. I've had no problems with mine other than using crappy Remington "Golden Bullet" bulk packs. The rifle will be inherently more accurate that a carbine because of longer barrel and sight radius.

he can also get good quality cheap fmj ammo online if he decides on 223 at grafs and sons or gunbroker. I do think that a 22 LR is the way to go for plinking.

backed up with one of these and you will have the best of both worlds, this conversion is quick easy and quite accurate.
