Like most of you I want to train more but often don't have the time or money. I especially want to train with my 870 that I have set up for home defense. Training with an empty gun isn't very in depth, however using live rounds inside the home is not very wise, to put it nicely.

I decided to buy some inert dummy shells for doing reload and slug select drills. After searching for some quality, yet inexpensive shells, I came across Fiocchi's offering. I ordered a box of 25 from Bud's and it came to about $22 after shipping.

When I got the package I opened it up and was rather impressed by what I found. These shells are made from a real hull and loaded with real shot in a real wad. There is no hole for a primer, and the rounds are clearly marked "DUMMY'. These rounds feel real, with the proper weight and balance of a 12ga 2 3/4' shell. They are also cheaper than many of the snap caps and plastic filled ones. They seem to cycle nicely in my 870 and because I'll only be using 12 or so at a time, I have twice as many as I need in case I lose a shell or wear one out.

These would also come in handy for doing malfunction drills at the range.

Those look nice... but I'm wondering what (if anything) that solid base will do to your firing pin after repeated strikes.

I believe the purpose of the solid base was to prevent the damage done by the pin repeatedly not striking anything.

Pins used to get damaged from dry firing all the time in older model firearms.

The pics in my op were taken before I was able to cycle any of these shells through my 870. This is a pick of a shell after a some at home training.

It dented the shell rather deeply. The pin shows no signs of wear or damage and I think that it will be fine after repeated impacts.
