Nothing new. People have been floating tipups in the summer on inner tubes or, just short lining a shiner on a milk jug for ages.

I've used the milk jug technique before but this is the first time I've seen a tip up used in this fashion. I may have to try this

Oh yeah, I forgot about letting cane poles go. I used to do that too but, we had to stay closer than drifting a jug or tipup.
