FENTON TWP. - Taking aim at balloons and an alien, the Fenton Lakes Sportsman's Club hosted its first Fun Pistol Shoot of the season Saturday.

"It's a lot of fun," said Tom Hubbert, 14, of Holly, who enjoyed testing his skills against more experienced shooters. "It's really different."

For the fun shoot, each shooter is given six bullets and 20 seconds at each of four stations: cardboard bowling pins, six round targets the size of a salad plate, a swaying cutout of an alien head and the big agitator - seven balloons.

Tom went a respectable 5, 6 and 4 in his three attempts at the balloons. No one managed all seven with six bullets Saturday, but a couple of people did manage to pierce two of the swaying targets with a single shot.

The event helps raise money for upkeep at the facility, which brags 24-hour access for approved members and the best ventilation around, said Pat Newkirk, of Grand Blanc, a range safety officer.

"It's a great little club," said Marla Lekarczyk, president of the club.

There are also plans in the works to have bowling pin shooting every other Thursday and putting a roof over some of the outdoor shooting areas, she said.

The fun shoots also help introduce nonmembers to the club and all it has to offer - including a friendly atmosphere, Newkirk said.

Member Chuck McQuillan of Highland showed a newcomer the ropes Saturday, offering tips and even loaning out his gun. He even turned on the laser sight for those who needed a little extra help.

"It's fun, isn't it?" McQuillan asked with a grin.
