PAULDING -- Hunting is no longer a sport dominated by men alone.

Women's hunting groups are forming across the country, with many ladies invading deer camps traditionally only inhabited by males. The western Upper Peninsula is no exception.

The Ontonagon Valley Sportsmen's Club, with an eye toward training more female hunters, is taking the lead locally toward getting women safely involved in the outdoors.

The club recently hosted its annual "Ladies Shoot." A half-dozen women from Ewen, Watersmeet and Bruce Crossing showed up to learn basic bow and shotgun fundamentals taught by National Rifle Association-certified instructors.

"Shooters shared their different levels of experience, from seasoned hunters to first-time shooters," said instructor Al Sanborn of Bruce Crossing.

Janel Miskovich, Pat Oltz, Colleen Hitz, Terri Cameron, Donna Watkins and Nancy Moll downed targets with the shotguns and nailed bulls-eyes with their arrows.

After enjoying a lunch, they shattered more targets on the shotgun course.

Sanborn said the women's preferences were equally divided between archery and shotgun shooting.

"Everyone enjoyed both. There just isn't a better way to spend a clear, crisp October day," he said.
