What do you guys sugest that I use for my Ar15 as far as target ammo? I want something I can get locally not on line. I will be using it on steel knock down targets and paper.

Thanks guys.

Depends on the twist of the barrel,if it is 1 in 9 I sugest a 68 grain bullet, for 55 grain you need at least a 1 in 12. Go to a acurateshooter on the web, alot of good info on .223 John

Say what?

I'm certainly no expert but, non of my AR's have a 1 in 12 and shoot 55 grains just fine.

I believe the original Stoner design for the M16 was a 1/12 twist rate for 55 grain NATO rounds.

I may have misinterpreted what the advice was.

Aren't most AR's these days 1:9 or 7 anyway?

it was 1:14 but the rounds wouldnt stabilize in the cold weather (fort richardson alaska) testing they did so they sped it up a bit...

it was originally a 1,000rps weapon as well but at that rate the 20 round mags would do a full dump in under 3 seconds and they were distorting the barrels. this was slowed to about 650-700 with a heavier buffer. or so im told (in basic training 27yrs ago)...

I'm no expert eighter, but I read and listen to people that claim to be.I have shoot alot of 55 out of a 1 in 9 also, hitting a 4" circle at 100 yards was doable on a regular basis,I can hit a 1" at 100 with a 69 grain almost every time. That tells me there is someting to what the experts say. John

Heck, I can scare a 4" circle at a hundred yards with my AK so that certainly nothing to get excited about unless you are the circle.

Really depends what your set up is, like some people have said here. If you have a 1:7 barrel you can stabilize 77gr. For quite a while I had a 1:9 barrel and even cheap-o Federal XM193 (the M193 Ball ammo) was getting sub-MOA groups at 100 yards.

I don't know how accurate you're trying to be, but if you want to achieve 1/3 MOA at 300 yards you might need to think about buying some Hornady/Black Hills/Federal type Sierra Match King online.

If you've got a 1:9 barrel and you want something inexpensive that still gets decent groups, get Federal XM193 55gr.
If you've got a 1:7 or 1:8 barrel and you want something inexpensive that still gets decent groups, get Federal XM855 63gr.

Also, its important to ask: is your barrel .223 specific, a Wylde chamber, or 5.56? I wouldn't recommend using the Federal 5.56 even in a Wylde, just because it might get stuck, who knows. If you're shooting .223 only (no 5.56) you might be hard-pressed to find decent ammo at Wally World or Dunhams. When I have my 5.56 barrel I never looked for .223 there, so I'm not sure what is available locally that is quality .223.

The original design was for a 900-950RPM which emptied a 20 round mag at just over a second.
