My wife and I are thinking of getting into shooting Trap.. any advice anyone can give would be appreciated... here are a few questions:
1. What would be a good starter gun for trap.. something not too expensive? I thought maybe the Remington 870 12 ga... but not sure..
2. We live Downriver of Detroit.. Are there any good places to shoot trap nearby? I have heard of the WACO Sportsmen's club.. but we would rather have someplace we dont have to join to shoot... not sure if such a place exists... ???
We have read some things online about it but never talked to anyone who actually does it... any suggestions???
Thanks!
No need ot spend a lot of money
a good old basic remington 870, mossberg 500 what have yah!
remember its the bow not the indian
Most shooting/sportsmen clubs have shooting for the public. Might cost a buck or so more/round than a member.

Tri-County Sportsmens League, in Saline has trap every Sunday 1- 4 pm. and every other Saturday (see their web site for exact dates)
Web site: http://tcsl.org/trap.html
I've never shot trap there but have wandered by and talked to the "regulars." After a few minutes of talking they were offering me to use one of their guns and give it a try. They will be happy to give you advise on what to use and / or buy.

Washtenaw Sportsman's Club in Ypsi has skeet/trap every Sunday morning, too.

Joel,
WACO Sportsmans club is open to the public for trap shooting. IIRC, its certain days of the week or if there is no scheduled shoot for members.
Cost is $4/round.
Give 'em a call for details.
As for trap guns, I've recently started as well. A Remington 870 is an outstanding choice for someone just starting out. Well balanced, good choice of barrel lengths, choke tubes are relatively cheap.
I'd opt for a 12ga with light loads for starters.
If you go with the 870 and are interested in a youth/short LOP stock for the Mrs. Let me know. My son has recently outgrown his youth stock set and I'll be putting the factory wood on his 870.
If I can get down to WACOSC in the near future I'll let you know. Maybe we can get together and you can try my 870's (one in 12ga., one in 20ga). I have a business trip comming up at the end of this month so it'll be February before I get down there.
Like I mentioned, I'm new at it. If you don't mind shooting with someone who's best is around 14 out of 25, I'll happily share a SG.
good luck,
Chris

I have a Remington Premier trap in 12 ga and I can shoot that gun all day and never feel a thing. Little pricey but well worth the dough. Recoil is so light it's amazing. I presume any gas gun will have reduced recoil. I joined a trap club here in NV and I have been shooting a lot of trap. I use Wally worlds cheapest field ammo too in 7-1/2. Your wife won't like getting the snot beat out of her by a solid breach gun like an 870...you probably won't either. Two rounds and you can't move your arm. When you go out to shoot trap you just can't shoot one round...it's addictive and I know I shoot at least 5 rounds when I'm out.

Nope.. havent given up... havent been on in awhile so havent had a chance to respond... new job lately so been very busy.
Thanks for all the responses... me and the Mrs plan to get out to a shoot when the weather warms up a bit ... some weekend no doubt as that is the only free time we have together.
Seen a couple of Remington 870 Express shotguns that look about right for starters like us... long ribbed barrell .. and affordable .. will do for the beginning and if we both hang in there and like it we can upgrade as skill improves... I figure by next month we will be looking for a place to check it out!
Thanks for all the help!
Side note: My 500th post! Yaaaaa! :)

My son uses a Winchester 1300 12 ga with a mod choke. We shoot the shells we buy from the Sportsmans club. winchesters 2.50 a box.
I shoot with my mossy 835 (my hunting gun) with a mod choke. same shells. matter of fact I need to shoot 100 clay this weekend to get my average through ATA so I can coach the School trap team.
Its a blast and don't take yourself too seriously. We have a 12 yr old girl that had never shot a gun of any kind till last year and she consistantly shoots 23 and 24 out of 25. the old guys love shooting with her. One old fella took one of his real nice trap guns and cut it down for her and gave it to her last weekend. she stepped up and hit 24/25 the guy just shook his head and smiled. she normally shoots a youth 1187.
