Some suggest gun buy-back program

Saginaw - Saginaw's leaders are looking at any type of cure to stop the rash of gun violence in the city.

No idea seems to be too farfetched for the City Council and the police chief, who took a citizen's suggestion on a way to get the guns off the city streets.

Assault weapons are rampant on Saginaw's streets. Last week police seized an fully loaded AK-47 from an east-side home.

Ridding the city of the weapons and the violence is a huge task with a shrinking police department.

"I think if we had the manpower to make traffic stops to interdict the guns that are out there, to make it less easy to get away with carrying a gun, I think the violence would decrease," said Police Chief Gerald Cliff.

Cliff is getting overtime dollars from the federal government which helps, but those officers risk their safety and a burnout factor if they work too many hours.

Cliff also looks to the community for help.

"We can't do it alone," he said. "The community can't do it by itself. Working together, hopefully we can have some kind of impact."

A city resident suggested to City Councilman Amos O'Neal about looking into a gun buy-back program. But Cliff says studies have shown it doesn't work.

O'Neal says any options have to be explored to stop the rash of shootings and killings in Saginaw.

Two big topics coming up in the future include federal dollars going to community policing and the possibility of getting a police millage back on the ballot.

Well, make up your mind, dude. Are they on the streets or in people's homes?

Also....Is it really a AK-47? Or just a look alike? BIG difference here!

Hell ...they could come in my house and find a fully loaded AK-47 look a-like....Does that mean that I am in violation of a law? Or anyone else in violation for that matter?

These reporters need to be held accountable for the crap that they shovel out!

Way too little information. Question is, how many "AK-47's" are used in the commission of a crime? Likely very, very few if any. Why did the cops seize the gun? Was it legally owned?

Typical BS new report ment to frighten the clueless public.

They don't call Saginaw "SAGNASTY" for nothing..... The ak, as seen on the news here was a real ak, with a 50 round drum. I agree, nothing illigal here, until they found the felon and drugs it the house with the gun. Saginaw has a REAL PROBLEM! A city with a population of about 40,000 people, with someone getting shot everyday, 2 last night. The drug and gang culture is running rampant there. For to many years, they have had mayors and city council that did not want to hold the citizens accountable for there actions. They have cut the police force from over 400 5 years ago, down to about 100 officers today. The city is VERY segregated, Most of the shootings are within a 15 block area. 90 percent of the shootings are happening around the streets that end in "WOOD". An older neighborhood that has turned over in the last 10 years. We refer to that area as "DEADWOOD" because of all the killing on those streets. The East side of Saginaw isn't any safer that the worst parts of Detroit or Flint, or even Grand Rapids........

The Police captain has stated " A gun buy back" would only bring in "junk guns" that are from legal owners, it will do nothing to get the guns out of the hands of the bad guys!
