Concealed-carry override falls short
Doyle's veto holds; law won't take effect
January 31, 2006
The Associated Press

The state Assembly on Tuesday failed to override the governor’s veto of a bill that would have ended the state’s 133-year-old ban on concealed weapons.

The 64-34 vote means Wisconsin remains one of only four states that prohibit concealed weapons and marks a victory for Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

Gun supporters and the measure’s Republican sponsors say the bill would have let people fight off criminals. But opponents countered the bill would add to gun violence, and Doyle vetoed the measure because he felt it would endanger the public.

A veto override takes a two-thirds vote in both the state Senate and Assembly - 22 votes in the Senate and 66 in the Assembly.

Wisconsin Vote Proves Dems Can't Be Trusted on Gun Rights, Self- Defense, Says CCRKBA

BELLEVUE, Wash., Jan. 31 /U.S. Newswire/ -- For the second time in two years, the failure of Wisconsin's State Assembly to override anti-gun Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of crucial personal protection legislation proves that Democrats are "all talk and no walk" on the issue of firearms rights and the safety of their constituents, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said this afternoon.

"For all their lip service about supporting the gun rights of Wisconsin citizens," said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron, "this vote once again demonstrates that Democrats cannot be trusted. When Democrats hit the campaign trail this fall, gun owners will be reminded that their rhetoric is empty, and that when they had the chance to do the right thing, they failed. Gov. Doyle may engage in political chest thumping and call this a victory, but in reality, it's a victory for criminals, who will have a risk-free working environment."

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb called the vote "deplorable" and criticized Wisconsin's Democrats for succumbing to anti-gun hysteria. The ultimate losers are the law-abiding citizens who are once again left with the knowledge that not only Gov. Doyle, but Democrats in the Legislature do not care about their safety or their right of self-defense, he said. Gottlieb was particularly critical of Assembly members John Steinbrink and Terry Van Akkeren, who were considered key override votes, but succumbed to partisan politics.

"We want these two lawmakers, and Gov. Doyle, to know that every time a woman is raped by a stalker or assaulted or murdered by an ex-boyfriend, their blood will be on your hands," Gottlieb stated. "Every time a shopkeeper is robbed, every time a motorist is the victim of a carjacking, every time a law-abiding citizen is victimized when he or she would have been able to fight back, that crime is as much your responsibility as that of the perpetrator, because you let it happen.

"The Wisconsin vote," Gottlieb said, "is symbolic of how Democrats across the nation will say one thing and do another when it comes to gun rights and personal protection. They are the party of victim disarmament, no matter what they say when they want your vote. Once again in Wisconsin, they have put political ideology ahead of public safety, and the criminals win while citizens lose."

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms -- http://www.ccrkba.org -- is one of the nation's premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.

Wisconsin Gun Lobby Fails in Effort to Override Governor's Veto

MADISON, Wis., Jan. 31 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Wisconsin gun lobby today failed to secure enough votes to override Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle's second veto of legislation that would ludicrously weaken gun laws in Wisconsin.

Under the proposal, loaded, hidden handguns could have been legally sneaked into rock concerts, shopping malls and the Wisconsin State Fair.

"Today, sensible state legislators stood up to the gun lobby and said this proposal was preposterous," said Jim Brady, Chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "They're right. You don't make a rock concert safer by letting everyone pack heat."

What a moron! If it's legal it isn't sneaking! And as I understand the proposal, rock concerts would be a no-no. Too bad Wisconson, you loose!

They never let the facts get in the way of politics but they let politics get in the way of safety and personal defense. What a shame, the fight goes on for the GOOD people of Wisconsin. :-(
